My Accutane Journey As An Athlete - Introduction

Posted by Augustus46, 21 December 2011 · 96 views

I have decided to start this blog so I can help myself and share my experience on Accutane as an athlete. To start off, my name is Austin and I am 16 1/2. My acne began in 7th grade when my face started producing enough oil to fry my own fries, the weather in California didn't help either. Then, in 8th grade my acne increased in amount, size, and in pain. During the summer before 9th grade, I joined Cross-Country and began running almost everyday. Sadly, without me knowing, my acne (which I thought was normal adolescent acne), erupted into painful and inflamed cystic acne. *I've always heard that the sun and exercising helped acne* By this time, I've been experimenting with different face washes, diets, and environmental factors. Some of them were: drinking more water, cutting back on diary products, eating less of certain foods, changing my pillow case everyday, never touching my face, putting on moisturizer, and stopped drinking soda.

Finally, 9th grade came... my face was scarred and filled with painful cysts. During this time I wash and moisturize everyday; along with the usage of different prescribed creams (I can't remember) and Benzoyl Peroxide of: .5%, 2.5% and 10%. In addition, I tried and hoped to cure it with natural remedies such as aspirin mask, lemon juice, honey, and many more other things. As the end of 9th grade came, my self-confidence and self-esteem was nonexistent. Furthermore, everyday in school I only thought about how my face felt like there were needles constantly poking me. Which was why it became harder for me to concentrate on school. Also, I noticed I was isolating myself, always hiding at my house and being depressed all the time. It didn't help when a little kid came up and asked what was wrong with my face. This was when I finally understood that I needed professional help or I might reach a breaking point.

So I preceded to go to my family doctor and he gave me topical creams that either didn't work or were the same but with different percentages. Therefore, I made him recommend me to a dermatologist, who never listened to me but glanced at me for two seconds and gave me ANOTHER topical cream. By this time, I was angry that I was losing the battle with acne so I went to another dermatologist, who I had to pay myself, but he listened and agreed to apply for Accutane even though I have never taken any acne medications (except topical). However, they rejected me... so I took one month of antibiotics and then reapplied (the antibiotics cleared 80% of my cysts but I knew they were temporary). So one month later, while I noticed that the antibiotics were becoming less effective, I was prescribed 40 mg of Accutane on the beginning of December!

With my story done. I am a Cross Country and Track runner, I also swim whenever I can. I didn't find many blog about how Accutane will affect competitive athletes. So I thought I'd start one and give you guys some of my tips and share my journey. I'll probably post a update every week. I would love to hear your comments, encouragement, advice, or questions!
