Some good old meat for lunch, instead of those dry slices of bread. I think I can get used to this cool.gif this

It is taken as a fact by almost everyone (this includes nutritionist and naturopaths) that omega 3 is essential for good health. But is this really so? How much do we need then? Who says it isnt just a marketing stunt? Almost every product these says is enhanced with omega; omega 3 enhanced, eggs, yogurt, margarine. Its still claimed that 'saturated fats are bad for you', but know we now better. Lets be sceptical and look at all the research that's been done on fish oil and omega 3.

What is assumed at this time?

Even the Weston Price Foundation, which I hold very high, acknowledges the EFA claims. Mary Enig, PhD, has pointed out numerous studies showing the need for omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids in mammalians. A 2005 study has shown evidence that gamma-linolenic acid, GLA, a product of omega-6, has been shown to inhibit the breast cancer promoting gene of Her2/neu.

It is generally claimed that:

  • Omega 3 reduces the risk of heart disease by providing a slippery protective coat on the walls of the arteries, thus inhibiting plaque from sticking to arterial walls.
  • Omega 3 has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body.
  • Omega 3 helps prevent cancer from growing by blocking cells that nourish the cancer.
  • Omega 3 is effective in helping decrease the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks over time. Regular consumption of fish or fish oil supplements have positive long-term effects on brain chemistry.

But what is known about the effect of long term omega 3 fish oils ingestion?

Im still looking into this all, as I (just like the majority of people) never doubted the health benefits of omega 3, but now I think and read about it, im not so sure anymore. We know that too much PUFA's are bad for your health and contributes to heart disease. Omega 3 is a super poly unsaturated fat. Highly instable and extremely susceptibile to oxidation. How can this be good for your body? Oxidation and free radicals are contributors to cancer and heart diseases.

The other side

Biologist Ray Peat, PhD, has pointed out flaws in the studies purportedly showing the need for n-3 and n-6 fats. He notes that so-called EFA deficiencies have sometimes been reversed by adding B vitamins or a fat-free liver extract to the diet. In his view, 'the optional dietary level of the "essential fatty acids" might be close to zero, if other dietary factors were also optimized.'

He suggests that the term essential fatty acid is a misnomer and that the human body can make eicosanoid-equivalents from Mead acid, an omega-9 fatty acid.

Possible negative effects of omega 3 fish oils:

  • Poly unsaturated fats interfere with proper thyroid function

QUOTE
According to Dr. Ray Peat, the fattening effect of polyunsaturated oils (primarily soy and corn) is due to the presence of Linoleic and linolenic acids, long-chain fatty acids, which have an anti-thyroid effect. Peat says:

Linoleic and linolenic acids, the "essential fatty acids," and other polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are now fed to pigs to fatten them, in the form of corn and soy beans, cause the animals' fat to be chemically equivalent to vegetable oil. In the late 1940s, chemical toxins were used to suppress the thyroid function of pigs, to make them get fatter while consuming less food. When that was found to be carcinogenic, it was then found that corn and soy beans had the same antithyroid effect, causing the animals to be fattened at low cost. The animals' fat becomes chemically similar to the fats in their food, causing it to be equally toxic, and equally fattening.

Of course in the 1940s the fat from pigs (lard) was highly desirable, as were most saturated fats. Today, saturated fats are fed to pigs to keep them lean, while most people buy polyunsaturated soy and corn oils in the grocery stores as their primary cooking oil! So we have a population now characterized by lean pigs and obese people…

Im starting to think that my impaired digestion is the biggest cause of my acne. And I think this goes for most acne sufferers, but ofcourse there's also the hormonal/genes aspect.

It all starts with your digestion and if that isnt 100% it messes up your organs (bowels, liver, kidneys).

QUOTE
Signs of improper digestion:
stomach upset, bloating, gas, abdominal pain, rumbling noises, nausea, vomiting or a burning sensation after eating.

Another sign of digestive issues are breakouts along the jawline. If you break out regularly on or beneath the jawline, it is very possible you need to detoxify and support your digestive tract.

Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety or disappointment can further disturb digestion, by either weakening the mechanism that controls stomach contractions or reducing the amount of digestive enzymes you secrete.

When I learned about nutrition and holisitic health, like 2-3 years ago, I made a lot of changes in my diet and eating habits. Ive been on and off strictly about not eating processed food and food with gluten and dairy in it. That improved my skin a lot, but it was nowhere near a cure...

A habit I didnt change is overeating at every dinner. I didnt eat much during the day, but I ate too much every night, which my digestion couldnt handle... resulting in being full a long time, sometimes heartburn and ofcourse gas. I thought the gas was because of the large amounts of fiber my body had to adjust to... but it was basically because of improper digestion.

Just now Ive come to the realisation that my digestion is not what it could be. Its not what you EAT, but what you ASSIMILATE and ELIMINATE. Eating healthy foods will not get you where you want to be, if your body cant absorb all the nutrients you are taking in. And when undigested food stays in your colon for too long, it will rot/ ferment and cause toxins which enter the bloodstream.

Then theres the concept of Leaky Gut Syndrome. I always thought LGS was something only people with candida had and I know I dont have candida (took a test). Now I think it makes sense that I might have some form of leaky gut, even though I have no real history of antibiotic treatment.

QUOTE
From AskShelley.com
A leaky gut can also be caused by severe allergies or very congested liver and contaminated bile ( by bad fats and bad eating habits), so its not just a Candida or Celiac thing.

The cycle in LGS that needs to be interrupted is a cycle of a too-porous intestine allowing large molecules (partially digested food) into the bloodstream. The immune system then has to go into overdrive, releasing white blood cells into the bloodstream attacking these large molecules. This teaches the body that this food is bad, so that now whenever we eat it, we have an immune response, or what's better known as an allergic reaction. Since this food is in our gut, the allergic reaction happens to the intestines, which means they swell. When they swell - just like your skin swells when stung by a bee - they break easily and more holes/permutations are created allowing more foods to enter the bloodstream and now we have a vicious cycle.

The liver gets overloaded with these large molecules and dead white blood cells that have to be filtered out, lymph and kidneys too. This wreaks havoc on the liver. Bile can be compromised, causing a highly acidic bile that burns the small intestine. So liver management is required. Flushing helps, but mostly the liver needs things that cleanse it and bile.

The intestinal lining can heal itself in as fast as 24 hours, but nutrient deficiencies and inflammation will slow down the process to as long as 3 days, and subsequent allergic reactions will create new pores.

Ive been too focused on what I eat and drink and havent been paying enough attention on what my body tells me. Thats what Im gonna do now! smile.gif

In my country there are many naturopaths/therapists who use two electronic systems to diagnose the health and energy levels of your body.

I can't find much info about these systems in English, but here's one link for you..
http://www.prognossystems.com/prognos.htm

They measure your energy levels and the health of your organs through the meridians (energy courses) of your body. It supposed to be able to find the root causes of your symptoms and determine what will help to cure it.

Prognos will measure your vitamin and mineral levels and detect fungi, parasites, bactaeria, toxins, hormones and emotions imbalance etc...
And ProNutri tests you for food sensitivities

Does anyone have experience with this? Do you think this could be for real? I think Im gonna give this a shot... costs about $100
