Just wondering if anyone who has used spiro ever experienced facial flushing?????

6 Apr 2008

I began experiencing facial flushing back in late November. Which is just after I started using a lot of new products. I started on Solodyn (minocycline), Yaz Birth Control, Differin Gel, and Duac. After about one month I stopped using the Solodyn. After two months I stopped using the Yaz Birth Control Pill and Duac. I continued with the differin gel until a few weeks ago.

I went back to the dermatologist after I stopped both the Solodyn and the Birth Control Pill in early January. I told her that I thought it was causing me to get really hot... I thought at the time that, that was all it was. Hot flashed or something. I thought the medicine caused it. So she perscribed me Bactrim. I used that for about two months. It worked great for break outs. However, I ended up getting a mild rash on my stomach from it. So I went back to the dermatologist about that and she toke me off it and put me on Spironolactone. Which I've been using now for two months and It is worked great for my break outs and my oily skin. Which I'm very happy about.

However the facial flushing has continued and gotten worse over time. I have only recently stopped using the differin gel. About three weeks now. I don't know what could have caused this facial flushing but... it's beginning to become impossible to live with. It mostly happens in any kind of heat or when I'm embarrsed/stressed. Although, sometimes it happens randomly for no apparant reason. It is very discomforting... my face feels like it is burning. When I touch my cheeks they are soooo hot. I can feel my face pulsing almost too. My ears also get very hot and red. It seems to be worse on the right side of my face than on my left side.

If I sit in front of a fan for a good 15-20 mins usually it will calm down. Also sometimes when I wake up in the morning my face is back to normal. Recently though even sitting in front of a fan or getting a good night's sleep isn't working anymore. I woke up today with my right cheek and ear very red... my left cheek was a little red too. My whole face felt so hot. I toke a cool shower and that helped. My face doesn't have that burning sensation anymore but my cheeks are still pretty rosy.

I don't know what caused this or what to do about it. I don't know what kind of treatment there may be. But if anyone knows please please please help me out. I would really appreciate any advice. I would love to hear about anything that may have worked for you.

I am going to the doctor tomorrow morning about this. I'm going to take a really warm shower and go right afterwards so she can see how bad this really is. Also I am going to try going to my dermatologist too if the doctor doesn't know what to do about it.

Please help me. I'm so depressed about this. This is effecting every day of my life. I don't want to go on forever dealing with this. What can I do about this?

I have seen a few people post on here about flushing and facial redness! I have this same problem. I am on Spironolactone now... have been for about two months. But I have been getting this random flushing for a while now... since Late November. Right after I started on the YAZ birth control pill and Solodyn in early November. I stopped using them both... but still have the problem. I have no idea if the two medications or one of them is what caused this or not. I experience flushing when I'm under any kind of stress, embarrassment, anger, heat, or after i shower or exercise. My face and ears get very warm. Lately my neck is blotchy too. I find it hard to believe it would be Rosacea for me because Sometimes my skin is completely normal... with a regular completion.

Also In October I got a really bad ear infection. And I've had cholesteatoma in the past. Which is a skin growth that occurs in an abnormal location, the middle ear behind the eardrum. It is usually due to repeated infection, which causes an ingrowth of the skin of the eardrum. Cholesteatomas often take the form of a cyst or pouch that sheds layers of old skin that builds up inside the ear. Over time, the cholesteatoma can increase in size and destroy the surrounding delicate bones of the middle ear. Hearing loss, dizziness, and facial muscle paralysis are rare but can result from continued cholesteatoma growth.

I went to the doctor about the ear ache I had in October and they gave me medicine that seemed to heal the infection. They didn't say anything about me having cholesteatoma again. But now my ear is aching again. And fluid runs out of it at night. Which is nasty. I have done a lot of researching and have found a lot of articals on line that do relate TUMORS with flushing. Cholesteatoma... is basically a tumor. So I'm wondering if this could be my problem.

BUT there are so many different things that connect too.

LUPUS! Is also a cause of flushing and facial redness. Solodyn which is Minocycline, I have read may cause lupus! Sooo.... seeing how i started on Solodyn and then began this flushing soon after... maybe I have lupus.

Also flushing could be cause by Hypertension... or High Blood Pressure! Side effects of high blood pressure are dizziness... which I have only recently experience (but it is a known side effect for those that take Spironolactone), bloody noses which I have gotten two in the past few weeks... I have only ever gotten one in my whole life before that and I am 19 years old! Also headaches and/or fever. Which I am experiencing right now. And I have a soar throat.

Soooooo.... me being completely clueless as to what the cause of my random flushing and sometimes blotchy neck... I am going to the doctor this wed. for a physical... and I am going to print out every thing I have found on flushing including this forum and another forum I have found with other complaining of the same thing.

I'm scared that It might be this tumor thing in my ear again. But if thats all it is... I'll be kind relieved as long as they can do the surgery and I am completely healthy... with no more flushing or ear aches.

So we'll see what happens. Either way I hope there is something my doctor can do. Because this is really beginning to make me upset.

I figured that I should post what products and treatments has worked best for me. I have tried a lot of different stuff. This is what i recommend:

Topicals:

Differin gel - Works fast, gentle, doesn't dry out skin, don't need to use much.

St. Ives Apricot GENTLE scrub - Gentle enough to use daily, doesn't dry out skin, is all natural, and leaves skin smooth and soft.

St. Ives Aloe and Chamomile Lotion - Isn't sticky, mosturizes very well, don't need to use much, Hypo-allergenic, and is all natural.

Oral Medications:

Spironalactone - Works fast, safe for long term use, side effects are very rare, and pills are small.

The only side effect I experienced was mild dizzyness. (I would suggest taking medicine before you go to bed to avoid dizzyness in the day time.)
