Journal of Investigative Dermatology. 1987 Mar;88(3 Suppl):2s-6s.
"Skin lipids: an update"
Downing DT, Stewart ME, Wertz PW, Colton SW, Abraham W, Strauss JS.
(excerpt from this study follows below, including the references...)
Sebum and Dry Skin "...skin can be healthy and have charming cosmetic properties in the virtual absence of sebum." (14)
Kligman drew attention to prepubertal children, who produce almost no sebum, to support his thesis that skin does not depend upon sebum for maintaining its barrier to water loss: "...there can be no doubt of the insignificance of sebum as a waterproofing material." (14) Our recent studies at the other end of the human age spectrum have supported this conviction. In a survey of sebum secretion rates and the incidence of dry skin among subjects aged 65 to 97, no correlation was found between sebaceous gland activity and the presence or severity of dry skin (34). Kligman recognized that sebum could mask the scaliness of dry skin without producing any actual change in the condition: "Sebum, like any oil, has some emollient or smoothing effect when a sufficient quantity is rubbed into dry, scaling skin." (14) In spite of the clear inference to be drawn from the cutaneous characteristics of children and the experimental data obtained from the elderly, it remains difficult to dispel the myth that low sebum secretion rates cause dry skin. It is a rare individual who realizes that "dry" is not the obverse of "oily".

I went to a lady today to have a chemical peel but it was very very mild compared to what I used to get years ago - no stinging or burning and I don't feel like it made too much of a difference. I have no idea what type of peel the lady I used to go to years ago put on my skin and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I should suggest to this new aesthetician to use? Salicylic acid or glycolic? If so what percentage?
I have REALLY bad dark spots all over and want them gone asap:( Anyone want to share their experiences and how long it took to get better.

Okay, so since started my regimen I have seen the most improvement I've seen since I started getting acne. All my white heads have gone away and the 2 cysts I had are also gone. Soon as I started taking my regimen every morning I woke up there would be 0 new whiteheads, I was completely shocked. So for the past few days I've come to the conclusion that I won't be getting them for a while( Knocks on wood). The red marks aren't really that bad and I know they will fade very soon so I'm not really worried about those. What I am worried about is that my skin is still has an uneven texture, black heads, and it seems that I still have pimples under my skin that have been there for ages but only I could see em.
I really don't want to use BP or a BHA. I know I could use Dan's AHA, glycolic acid, and mandelic acid. But is there really anything else out there? I kinda need something to get deep down in the pores and get that crap out, make my whole face an even texure and get all that blackheads out of my nose. Help?

SEA SALT!
Hey, i just wanted to share wit u guys wat i did this morning... i was reading up about salt water from the ocean and how it helps kill bacteria and help heal existing acne, so i thought i would put it to the test... so i looked in my cupboard and found a small bottle of 90 gram "SAXA Mediterranean Sea Salt" and thought id make it into a face wash... so i looked for a bottle and could only find "thursday plantations tee tree oil face wash" (this was the only one i could feel safe in trying as it iz meant for the face and treats acne) plus there was still a tiny amount of tee tree oil face wash in there...
So i got all the salt and added it to a bowl wit 250ml of water (250ml is the size of the bottle) and thought id add sumthin else that would be good 2 have, so i was looking around and found some vitamin C tablets (1000mg each) and added only 2... i crunched them up into powder and added it with the sea salt, and water... then i added them to the tee tree oil face wash bottle, with the 250ml of water... and tryed it... and u know wat!....ITS AMAZING!... i had 2 massive pimples on the side of my face and when i hopped out of the shower they were way smaller than wat they were before the shower.... ITS GREAT!...
HOW TO MAKE:
1) Pure Sea Salt, amount to add depends on how big the bottle ur adding it to, i added 1/4 of a cup (60ml)
2) Vitamin C, add 2000mg of vitamin c ground to powder form.
3) Add with the smallest amount of tee tree oil...
4) Mix all the products together (vitamin c, tee tree oil and sea salt) with the water to fill ur bottle.
5) clean up any mess...lol
P.S the wash comes out in a full liquid, like normal water...
HOW TO WASH:
1) run face under warm water for 2 minutes...
2) hold bottle at the forhead wit the lid open...
3) let the face wash run down ur face..
4) gently rub into affected areas...and other areas but mainly affected ones...
5) leave on for 20-40 seconds...(u will feel a stinging sensation)
6) wash off
7) continue rinsing for another 2 minutes with just plain warm water
8) pat dry...
9) you might also want to go out in the sun WITHOUT sunblock for 5 minutes, that seems to help
P.S its much easier to do it in the shower...
So there u have it, its so simple and its already staring to work from the first wash...
GOOD LUCK!

I got my first pimple about two years ago and my skin has not been great since. My chin area has lots of pimples, probably due to puberty. I have tried both Purpose Gentle Cleanser and Fragrance Free Neutrogena Liquid Cleanser, both have their pros and cons. Purpose gentle cleanser is not as harsh, but my face seems oily by the end of the day when using this cleanser. With the Neutrogena, my face is oil free and remains dry and not oily throughout the day. Which do you recommend that I stick with? Currently I am switching around, because I am not sure which works best for me. Thanks guys.

Hi all,
As you all have encouraged me esp when I felt so diff and ugly I thot to share my experience and (touch wood) s'thing that has worked for me if only for one month!!!!
I have had acne since approx 17yrs of age thot it would pass with puberty but it got crazy and really bad at approx 22 yrs and has been for last 6yrs. With time I have mastered the clean your face regularly routine and have been on various antibiotics, still am, and at some point a contraceptive, which dare I say was a bad decision on my part, in all I have tried any thing for oily skin and acne including home made cures. Not to mention the effects it has had on my self esteem!!!!
Anyway approx a month ago I got introduced to a Mary Kay acne range and I thot hmmm 'u just want to make a quid on my face!' but after a few conversations and the thot I have tried all I could what harm is there in trying this as well. I bot the stuff and quite amazingly it has worked really well, I especially loved the cleanser as it is very fine and did not irritate sore areas of my face and for the month I would say it has reduced the new spots by approx 80pc which for me is brilliant
I am now going to buy the main pack as I was using the trial kit, have spoken to the the derm and he says to continue with it and let her know if anything happens. My prayer is I can get off the medication and just use this .......... but hey I am glad if only for the clearing face.

Has anyone had a great experience or is still having great results as a result of using a skincare/acne kit?
I'm now on Benzaclin but I like to try new and different kits just to see how they work, I like to test things on my skin, call me crazy but I'm just looking to see if I can find a cheaper and maybe even possibly better alternative....
Thus far I've tried Proactiv, Neutrogena Advanced Solutions, Clean & Clear Advantage, & AcneFree. I know alot if not all of these kits are made with the same product or products, being SA or BP. But sometimes the other ingredients in the products can make one kit differ from another. If you can't think of another kit then what individual products would you reccomend that work good for you (ie. Cleansers, toners, treatments, moisturizers) I'm pretty much willing to try anything.
Winter is coming here in CA and that means hell for my skin so maybe a new regimen or improved regimen will help my normally oily, sensitive and breakout prone skin act a little differently. But like I said anything will help and I'll try just about anything. Thanx!

It's "Smoothie King" brand lip balm. I dunno if you're familiar, but SK is a health/nutritional lifestyle smoothie shop. I looked at the ingredients on the lip balm and was pleasantly surprised!
Check it out:

i was put on ziana over a year ago and it never worked. i quit using it about 8 months ago, and for some reason i keep breaking out on my forehead. the regimen has taken care of the acne on my face, but it wont take away the acne on my forehead. i am almost certain ziana is the cause of this, because the initial breakout only occured on my forehead...... i still dont know why that happened. the acne on my forehead isnt that bad. its just very persistent and i cant seem to shake it. has anyone else had an experience like this while on ziana or after they stopped using ziana? also, prior to using ziana, i had never had any acne on my forehead,

Hi all,
I have been using Tretinoin 0.05% lotion for 6 weeks now a long with an antibiotic gel called Eryacne. This combo started to dry me out slowly but surely and at the moment it's gotten really bad (bad redness and peeling). So I have started to use a moisturizer (an older version of the Clean&Clear moisturizer) which I used for my my previous Differin regimen.
Now for my qeustions: can I use this moisturizer a long with the gel and lotion? Will the results be the same? Does it matter how I put the moisturizer on my face (does it have to be very softly done or doesn't it matter when I'm in a rush and just rub it on?) Does it matter if I apply more than is recommended because that fights the dryness better?
Oh and I know the moisturizer is suposed to be applied after the gel/lotion but I don't know how long I have to wait before I can apply the moisturizer?
Thanks!

What do people think of the following?
I am at the point where nothing works anymore and it comes down to a lack of oil being produced as a result of roacctuane that I took 5 years ago.
Evidence of Maitake extract (lipid) on enhancement of skin sebum secretion (in vivo)
《 Method 》
Male Golden hamsters (three weeks-old) were treated with 50ml of 95%ethanol/5%glycenol including the Maitake mushroom extract or Agaricus extract on their left auricular region once a day. The control group hamsters were treated with only solvent on their right auricular region in the same way. Two weeks later, frozen sections of the auricular region were made and stained with oil red O.
The stained tissue sections of the auricular region showed up on digital imaging under the optical microscope and the rate of lipid droplets was quantified by an image analysis system (Lumina Vision).
Quantitation of intracellular lipid droplet formation stained with Oil red O (in vivo)
Maitake extract (Lipid) significantly stimulated the amount of fat stored in the sebaceous gland tissue; The fat stored in the sebaceous gland tissue increased 1.6, 3 and 1.3 times respectively in the groups receiving 1, 2 and 4% of Maitake extract (Lipid). While Agaricus extract (Lipid) did not interfere with the amount of fat stored in the sebaceous gland tissue in the groups receiving 1, 2 and 4% of Agaricus extract (Lipid) (Fig.4).
3. Summary of the effects of Maitake Extract (Lipid) on sebum production - in vivo and in vitro -
The results suggest that Maitake Extract (Lipid) exerted a significant effect on enhancement of sebum production in vivo and in vitro. These effects are significantly stronger when compared with Agaricus extract (Lipid).
Maitake extract (Lipid) is a novel natural material which should be useful for the improvement of xerosis (dry skin) associated with sebaceous gland disorders. The exiting aspect of this discovery is that Maitake extract (Lipid) is exerting its beneficial influence on the origin of the disease rather than simply suppressing the symptoms.
Has anyone had an experience with this or do they think this could potentially help with producing oil again?

My daughter began using the Clarsonic along with Clinique acne solutions. She tried Clinique by itself and saw some improvement. With the Clarisonic added, 4 months later she is COMPLETELY CLEAR!!!!!!!! She used to have at least 20 zits to cover up. She had gone thru all the antibiotics. Accutane was our last thing to try.
It's a $200 investment that worked for us.

Hello! I'm new to the board. I'm 21 years old and I have acne. I think it's moderate. But my mom is always like no it ain't that bad. Well to me it is, I think she's just trying to make me feel better. Anyway it started when about about 15 I believe and really got bad aroudn 16. Then several months ago I thought I was finally out growing it or something and it's been breaking out pretty bad in a certain area. And then when it clears up and almost goes away, it does it again somewhere else on my face. This past Sunday I finally ordered Proactiv to try. I don't know how many times I was going to order it but never did. I can't wait to get it and try it. I hope it works for me. I've read stories about people saying it work, as well as I heard it didn't work. I've had people tell me that it may make my face worse before it gets better but it will only last about a week and then get cleared up and stay cleared up. I really hope it helps. There used to be this stuff I got from Walmart (it was the 3 piece system as well) called "Pro Acne" and it worked wonders for my face, I loved it and made sure I didn't run out. Well all the sudden it was gone. And they come out with this other stuff that was supposed to be the same (I dont' remember what it was called) But it wasn't! And it didn't work. Since then I've went back to trying random stuff and no luck at all! I was having good luck with Clean & Clear Products. Currently I'm using Nutrogena. To me it looks like something has just feasted on my face

I have literally tried about everything!! You name it... I've tried it! I haven't been to a dermatologist. I don't have any insurance and I don't see what they would do. My sister had some pads from a dermatologist that helped on her. She let me try them and they did NOT work. Well.... any advice for me ANYONE???

Before I started the CSR, I used Gillette Foamy aloe & allantoin (Gillette comfort glide) shaving cream. (see link)
http://www.drugstore.com/qxp27655_333181_s...d_allantoin.htmI could not find anywhere on the bottle it saying anything about being non comedogenic. I can't stand using soap lather anymore!
Can any of you recommend a good non comedogenic shaving cream that can be purchased at a local walmart or drugstore?
thanks for reading

I'm currently using retin-a (I just started about a week ago) and my face is soooo dry! Right now I'm using Olay Active Hydrating Cream at night, and during the day I use Aveeno positively radiant 30 spf. But it doesn't really seem to be enough, what's another good moisturizer I could use (either day or night?) that won't clog pores or break me out!
Thanks !!

I have been dx with PCOS....so my doc put me on a bcp of Loestrin 24 FE....I didn't like it because it broke out my skin really bad and my mood swings were terrible. So after a week, my doc told me to stop taking it and gave me a new BCP which I will start on sunday. I am currently taking spiro 50mg x2 day, and a hair pill since I've lost about half my hair from this PCOS. My derm just put me on Solodyn for 3 months for the bad bad acne I have. I have been on the solodyn for 5 days...90mg x1 day. My face is usally very oily to where I don't need lotion. for today and yesterday my face has been sooooo dry to where I have to put so much lotion on and it's still dry. It's flaky. It looks like I had a chemical peel down where you peel like a snake. Anyone have any of these syptoms from the same meds. And can anyone suggest a good lotion for the dryness??
I don't like the cetephill so something other then that.
