After having great success with Sea Salt baths (see other thread).......I noticed the following:
Observation:
Remaining occasional blemishes were focused on borders of hair......on face, back of neck, underarm, and inner thigh.....first thing came to mind is longtime assumption that I had some sort of folliculitis.
Next Step:
Researched the subject.....and found a medical paper on eMedicine.com (http://www.emedicine.com/DERM/topic338.htm) that said "Pityrosforum Folliculitis" is regularly misdiagnosed as acne......and is successfully treated with a chemical known as "Ketoconazole", the main ingredient in a dandruff shampoo called "Nizoral". Over-the-Counter is 1% strength and sold at Target, Walgreens, etc....it comes stronger with a prescription.
Bought it and have been using as a shower gel.....letting it sit on my body for 5 minutes before washing off.
As of the date of this post it has only been one week, but I have never seen my quality of my skin improve so much so quickly.....
Does anyone know anything about this beyond what little I have found?
Thanks.

Nutritional and Holistic tips for combatting Body acneCAN BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH DAN'S BP/AHA REGIMEN!After several instances of repeating myself in other threads, I decided to make a definitive thread of my advice for body acne sufferers - the following tips have helped me considerably with my body acne, and hopefully some of you may find they help, too.
Just to clarify - you don't need to do all the things I recommend at once! You could just try each thing for a few weeks to see if there is any improvement.Disclaimer: Acne.org does not endorse any of the following products or regimensDietary and internal cleansing advice-
Cut out dairy and red meat - this really helped with my body acne. I'd recommend you try avoiding all forms of dairy completely for at least 3 weeks to see if there is an improvement. You can replace dairy milk with rice milk in cereals and drinks.
- Drink
warm water with lemon juice added throughout the day. Try using up the juice of one whole lemon each day, in about 10 glasses of water. This will help cleanse your liver of skin-harming toxins, as well as helping to reduce inflammation.
-
Cut out all wheat products - this can be more difficult. You could try and avoid all forms of wheat pasta, wheat bread, pizza, biscuits etc, anything containing wheat, for 3 weeks again, to see if there is any improvement. It IS difficult, but there are alternatives, and it would only be for 3 weeks, unless you do find it has an effect, in which case I don't think cutting those things out would be too much of a sacrifice.
-
Cut out refined sugar. This isn't too difficult if you avoid chocolate, sweets, soft drinks etc. If you don't want to do this, then taking a supplement of
chromium GTF can help, if sensitivity to sugar is the thing that's affecting you.
-Try some of the following
supplements. They can be effective in combatting acne and increasing your healing capacities:
-
Zinc[ (75mg/day),
-
Vitamin C (2000mg/day),
-
B complex (100mg/day),
-Beta Carotene (15,000ug/day),
-vitamin E (400IU/day),
-propolis (1000mg/day),
-
acidophilus/probiotics (1 capsule containing 5+billion/day)
(I've put the ones in bold that I think would be most helpful)
I recommend searching the catalogues at
www.iherb.com,
Victoria Health and/or
Biocarefor your supplements - they are usually reasonably cheap and excellent quality.
Taking
essential fatty acids such as Flax oil or fish oil may have a balancing effect on your hormones, also.
Healthyandessential.com do a great range of these.
If none of the above help, at all, you could possibly look into undergoing
colonic hydrotherapy at a naturopathy clinic - this is extremely cleansing to your digestive system, which can have dramatic effects on your acne.
Topicals adviceCleanserYou could try washing with a very mild cleansing bar, as soap and supposed 'acne cleansers' can sometimes aggravate the skin further.
Puredeming's castille bar is very good.
Antibacterial agent If BP is not working particularly well for you, you might like to look into the
Manuka oil and honey antiseptic gel that
Living Nature do - manuka oil is a strong antibacterial agent, and can be even more potent against p.acnes bacteria than tea tree oil. I find the gel to be very soothing to the skin.
Moisturiser Nature's Gift do an EXCELLENT essential oil mix, called
clarifying synergy, which you can combine with hazelnut oil to make a calming antibacterial moisturiser.
Using a body-beautifying oil such as hazelnut, emu, jojoba or coconut will help moisturise your skin without clogging pores, and will help to reduce redness.
Other treatmentsTry bathing every other day in a bath to which you have added a few drops of manuka/tea tree oil, a couple of tablespoons of
apple cider vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of unrefined sea salt. This will help to soothe your acne and will ensure maximum absorption.
You may want to look into weekly
lactic acid peels. This can help to remove dead skin cells, dirt, and other factors that may clog pores. It can also help fade red marks and shallow scarring. Good suppliers include:
Puredeming and
Loganwood skincareI hope some of this may be helpful. Good luck and just PM me if you need any info or advice on anything I've suggested or anything else!
Best Wishes,
Paul

INFORMATION ON BODY SCARRINGDISCLAIMER: ACNE.ORG DOES NOT ENDORSE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS OR BRAND NAMES. THE PRODUCTS CITED ARE SIMPLY THOSE THAT I HAVE PERSONALLY FOUND EFFECTIVE AND WHICH HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED BY OTHER MEMBERS ON THESE MESSAGE BOARDS.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that body acne is often more severe than facial acne, scarring is more likely, and the scarring is likely to be more significant. Sadly, there has been less research carried out into scarring on the body, and therefore many of the recommended treatments for facial scars that are cited on the scar treatments section of the board are not suitable for body scars. Therefore, I am attempting in this thread to provide information and links for treatments that may be effective in helping to reduce or fade body scarring.
Please be aware that it is likely that no treatments will actually rid you of your body scarring, but also keep in mind that the scarring will probably fade considerably over time.
There are three stages in body scarring. Open wound stage - this is the stage following the bursting of a cyst. The cyst can be likely to bleed and then leave a very sore and painful wound. Traditional antiseptics such as savlon and sudocrem are not, in my experience, gentle enough for dealing with these types of wounds, and they also contain lanolin, which can worsen the situation by encouraging more active acne.
These are my healing recommendations at the open wound stage.
1)Cleanse lightly with mildest cleanser you can. The one I recommend is the pure olive oil castile bar available from
http://www.puredeming.com/products/2) Apply an antiseptic, but gentle gel – preferably manuka oil and honey antiseptic gel available from
https://www.livingnature.com/catalog/main.c...id=102&cid=1932 This will encourage healing whilst preventing infection and reducing active acne. It is very soothing see THIS link
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...+nature++living3) Apply 100% pure manuka honey to the inside of a plaster, then apply over the wound, to reduce pain and infection. Manuka honey is available from health stores, or from
www.comvita.com Try and get honey with a UMF of 10+ (this is the antibacterial rating) This will help with the healing of the wound. See this link:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...l=manuka++honeyChange the plaster regularly and repeat the regimen above.
Try taking 400 IU Vitamin E, 50mg Zinc and 2 grams Vitamin C every day at this stage.
See this thread for more info on vitamins:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/-t31390.htmlPropolis capsules may also be beneficial. (see this link:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...862)
Scabbing stage: gradually, a scab will form over the wound. The scab may come off easily, in the shower for instance, but it is best to try and allow the scab to remain on for as long as possible.
Healing recommendations:
Cleanse again with a gentle cleanser, ideally puredeming castile bar.
Apply manuka oil and honey antiseptic gel
Apply
emu oil to encourage moist healing. ( and possible reduction in scarring) available here:
http://search.ebay.com/emu-oil_W0QQsokeywo...rectZ1QQfromZR8 SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/Recommended-Products-R-t14887.htmlRed Mark stage: At this stage, the scar will have fully healed, but it may leave indented or raised scar tissue that will initially be red or purple, and inflamed. This redness will fade naturally within a year or so, but the healing may be accelerated by following the following regimen.
Cleanse with puredeming castile bar
Apply manuka oil and honey gel (although less important at this stage)
Apply amino plex spray (available by e-mail from
Loganwood skincare) or copper peptides. Both are quite expensive, and some members feel they are not worth the money. However, they can help somewhat. SEE THESE LINKS:
amino-plex,
Copper peptidesMoisturise with emu oil/ rotate every few weeks with a week of bio oil (see this link:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...topic=19108) to see if this gives any better improvement for you.
Apply some form of silicon pad over scar and wear continuously for at least 12 hours a day– reduces redness significantly. I would HIGHLY recommend these for reducing redness. They are available in Chemists. The elastoplast ones are particularly good. SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...topic=25216Twice weekly lactic acid peels.available here:
Loganwood skincare or
here (puredeming) SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...19370(however, DO NOT follow Laet's advice and leave the lactic on for 30 minutes! This can be quite dangerous - Laet only did this because she had built up her skin to tolerate lactic acid)
Look into microdermabrasion. SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...crodermabrasionFinal scar stage: By this point the redness in the scars should have completely faded, but the scars may remain as white, possibly shiny and hairless areas of skin. These are known as
atrophic macules, and are different to the type of scarring on the face. Over time, they will fade considerably, usually ending as a pale-ivory colour that should blend in with your skin. They should not be too noticeable, but for people who feel self-conscious about their scars, there are a number of options. Treatments such as dermabrasion and TCA CROSS are NOT recommended for body scarring.
The following have been used on body scarring with some reported success:
Course of microdermabrasions (see link above) - quite a few may be needed to make any significant difference to body scarring.
Skin needling. A procedure whereby the scar is 'tatooed' without any ink. This damages the scar tissue underneath the dermis, causing it to restructure and possibly rise to the surface. This is good for deep rolling scars. SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...354Subcision. This procedure involves the scar tissue being cut away from the healthy skin in an attempt to rise it to the surface. It can theoretically raise round, 'crater' like scars significantly although it is not always successful and can cause significant bruising. SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...32Scalpel Excision - This involves a crater like atrophic scar being stitched up to form a thin, thread-like linear scar. However, excisions on the back can be problematic - due to the amount of movement the back and shoulders carry out in daily life, the excisions can be easily torn apart, leaving you back at square one. if successful, though, this is probably the best option for atrophic macules on the back and shoulders. The chest area is usually too tight to have successful excisions performed.
Smoothbeam This is a type of non-ablative laser, which can stimulate collagen production. It may also help with active acne. It could be used in conjunction with subcision or needling. You may need several smoothbeams to see any results. SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...0IsolagenA procedure where skin cells are extracted from a part of your body such as the backs of your ears and then grown in a lab, before being injected into the scar tissue. It is a relatively new procedure but there is reported success with indented scars. SEE THIS LINK:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...506Micropigmentation - This involves artificial pigments being injected into the macular area to help blend in the colour of the scars with the surrounding skin colour. This can be successful in camouflaging scars, but the scars will become more noticeable again if the surrounding area becomes tanned.
Hope this is helpful. Remember that helpful information on all forms of scarring and treatments can be found over in the 'scar treatments' section of the message boards.
Good luck to everyone treating their body scarring.
Rossignol.

[minus the star, because if i don't put in the star it won't let me see the link, don't know why.]
but yeah, has anyone actually tried this? i'm tempted to head over to walgreen's tonight and get that panoxyl stuff and try this for a week. i'm so desperate. this stuff bleaches clothes, i'm assuming? so i'll have to wear old t-shirts that i don't care for, for a week?
but yeah if you tried doing this, please post here and tell me how it went! were your bacne scars all gone? i'm pretty sure i'm going to start this tonight. does it hurt, or just itch? how would you keep from scratching?

Ok i just had a hair cut....most painful hair cut of my life. For some reason i always get scalp acne just before i get a hair cut. I like to think of it as my bodies way of saying FU because my face is almost clear now. I always have some sore zits on my scalp and i found dans video where he said that some people are using dandruf shampoo. He said that some people on the message boards were talking about it. I was wondering if anyone had the link to the thread or what worked from them to get rid of there scalp acne.

Hello
I'm 35, and have never suffered much with acne - maybe the occasional spot on my forehead as a teenager. However, the last six months has seen the development of awful cystic acne covering my back and neck - also, to a slightly lesser extent on my chest, stomach, shoulders and groin.
My GP initially prescribed Oxytetracycline, which I took for about 1 month - this had absolutely no effect. He then switched me onto Doxycycline, which I have now been taking for nearly 2 months - during this time, the acne has gotten worse. I have an appointment with a dermatologist on July 29th, but I'm beginning to despair.
What can I expect from my appointment? Any ideas, suggestions, or help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jamie.

Pityrosporum Folliculitis - FAQIntroductionA lot of people are struggling with that they think are acne primarily on their chest, shoulders and back. It may also develop on the face(primarily the forehead). After trying countless acne medications or simply by trying to wait it out the condition still persists. The fact is that many "body acne" sufferers got some sort of folliculitis and when the lesions develope on the upper body it's often Pityrosporum Folliculitis they got.
The same questions pop up under the body acne section, and by creating this thread I'm hoping to answer some of this questions. However, be advised that I'm not a dermatologist or expert on the field. The information I'm providing is mostly from what I've read(countless hours of reading up on the subject online) and from what I have experienced.
This thread is a working progress and I hope others also will participate with information they have on the subject. Questions regarding this FAQ or contributions can be done by replying in this thread, but general questions regarding Pityrosporum Folliculitis can be asked in
this thread. It has a lot of great information and users own experiences with PF.
What is Pityrosporum Folliculitis? The first thing you should do is research the subject on your own. There's a lot of information found on the net and here are some good links:
http://www.emedicine.com/DERM/topic338.htmhttp://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/16713http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_dise...orum_folli.htmlhttp://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/reprint/159/1/64.pdfhttp://dermatology.cdlib.org/rxderm-archiv...um-folliculitishttp://www.vgrd.org/archive/cases/2005/pit/pit.htmDo i have Body acne or Pityrosporum Folliculitis? This is the first question that people with "Body Acne" ask themselves when they are confronted with the term Pityrosporum Folliculitis. However this is often the hardest one to answer since "Body Acne" and Pityrosporum Folliculitis look a lot alike. Also a lot of people have them both at the same time since both acne and Pityrosporum Folliculitis thrive on oily skin.
Some things you should consider to find out if it's acne or Pityrosporum Folliculitis:
- Go to a dermatologist(This is the safest thing you can do to find out if it's body acne or Pityrosporum Folliculitis). Be sure to contact the derm before you schedule an appointment to be sure that he can do a biopsy or something like that to find out what your condition is.
- Have you tried acne medication without success? If you have it's more likely that you got Pityrosporum Folliculitis
- Have you used antibiotics previously. If this made the condition worse or if you got the spots on your body after the use of Antibiotics it's most likely Pityrosporum Folliculitis you got.
- Does it sometimes itch. If it does it's probably Pityrosporum Folliculitis
- Do you got Acne on your face too? If your face it's pretty much clear, but your body breaks out it's more likely that Pityrosporum Folliculitis is what you got. Pityrosporum Folliculitis can develop on the face to, but it's much less frequent.
- Does it get worse in hot, humid or sweaty environments or in periods where you don't shower much. If it does it's more likely Pityrosporum Folliculitis you got.
- There is no comodones or cysts associated with PF. It's Papules and Pastules and the material expressed from pustules is white to yellow
- Try some sort of medication against Pityrosporum Folliculitis(see treatments below) and see if this improve your condition. A safe bet is to buy a cream containing 2% ketoconazole(Nizoral, Daktarin Gold or something like that), and try it for a couple of weeks to see if it improves the condition.
- Check out the pictures of Pityrosporum Folliculitis below to see if it looks like what you got.
What does Pityrosporum Folliculitis look like?http://www.aocd.org/images_ddd/Pityrosporu...itis_1_high.jpghttp://www.aocd.org/images_ddd/Pityrosporu...itis_2_high.jpghttp://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/reprint/171/8/851.pdfhttp://www.skinatlas.com/pityrosporum.jpghttp://dermnetnz.org/common/image.php?path...img/pitfol1.jpghttp://dermnetnz.org/common/image.php?path...img/pitfol2.jpghttp://dermnetnz.org/common/image.php?path...img/pitfol3.jpghttp://162.129.70.33/images/folliculitis_1_010901.jpghttp://162.129.70.33/images/folliculitis_2_010907.jpghttp://162.129.70.33/images/pityrosporum_f...is_1_040505.jpghttp://www.acne.org/messageboard/forums.html...stWhat kind of treatments are there?TopicalMost popular on acne.org:KetoconazoleZinc PyrithionePropylene Glycol- Description: Used by a lot of members on acne.org with great success. Very easy to use since one option is to just spray it on using a spray bottle. It's fast, cheap and easy to apply to f.ex your entire upper body. With a cream it's hard to apply it to f.ex your entire upper body and it's therefore likely that the PF might spread.
Propylene Glycol is often used in a concentration with water(50/50 of each). Sometimes you can buy 100% percent Propylene Glycol, but then you should dilute it with water before applying. If you look at the ingredients list on a lot of cosmetics you can see that Propylene Glycol is almost always on it. However, don't expect that your regular acne medication might work since it has Propylene Glycol in it. It's often a very low percentage of actual Propylene Glycol in the product. - Research/information:
- Pityrosporum folliculitis: a common disease of the young and middle-aged - Products:
- Leave on product: PG from chemistrystore.com, 50/50 PG/Water from Cubancrafters.com
Mandelic Acid- Description: There is very little research on the antifungal effect of Mandelic Acid, but it's a popular product on this board against Pityrosporum Folliculitis. It's claimed to be both antifungal and antibacterial and exfoliates the skin. Therefore it's also good against red marks left from acne/PF. I personally receommend the product from Vivant for Pityrosporum Folliculitis on the body since it's a strong product(15% Mandelic + 2% lactic), it has very little ingredients besides the Mandelic and has some Propylene Glycol in it. However, the serum is very expensive and therefore it might be wise to buy the toner(9% mandelic) if your economy is tight.
- Research/information:
- Mandelic acid is amazing against blackheads and acne ...
- Nucelle changed my life - Products:
- Cleanser/wash: Vivant Mandelic Acid Cleanser
- Leave on product: Vivant Mandelic Acid serum, Vivant Mandelic Acid toner, Nucelle Mandelic Acid
Other treatments:Salicylic Acid- Description: Used against both acne and Pityrosporum Folliculitis and is always a safe bet if you aren't 100% sure what you got. Mostly used in a concentration from 1,5% to 3% and either as a cleanser or a leave on product. A leave on product is nearly always the best bet since the Salicylic acid in cleansers doesn't sit on the skin long enough to do anything. Also, a Salicylic Acid product has to have a low pH to work(no higher than pH 4 is recommended). Most if not all cleansers has a higher pH than that and therefore the Salicylic Acid is pretty much ineffective.
- Research/information:
- The antifungal activity of Salicylic Acid
- Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis - Products:
- Leave on product: Dan's Salicylic Acid, Paula's Choice Liquid BHA, Salicylic Acid from dianayvonne.com
SulfurSelenium SulfideTea Tree Oil- Description: Both antibacterial and antifungal and effective against Malassezia furfur(the same as P. Ovale) Should be diluted with f.ex another oil like emu or jojoba. You can also find it as a shampoo. Never buy Tea Tree Oil in plastic bottles. Also it's best if it's stored in dark glas bottles.
- Research/information:
- Tea Trees and Their Therapeutic Properties - Products:
- Leave on product: Desert Essence Organic Tea Tree Oil
Manuka Oil/honeyCiclopirox olamine cream- Description: Antifungal often used to treat Pityrosporum folliculitis
- Research/information:
- Monograph - Ciclopirox Olamine - Products:
- Leave on product: Can be bought from drugstore.com
Econazole creamOil of Oregano- Description: Antifungal
- Research/information:
- More information on this - Products:
Leave on product: Oil of Oregano from North American Herb and Spice
Apple Cider VinegarOralAzole antifungal agents- Description: The two most used are Ketoconazole and Itraconazole. It's very effective, and if it is indeed PF you got these mediacations should make a remarkable clearing. However, you are lucky if the results are permanent and one should continue topical medication afterwards.
- Research/information:
- Short term treatment of pityrosporum folliculitis with itraconazole - Products: You need a prescription to get this medication legally, and therefore you have to contact your doctor to get this stuff.
Isotretinoin- Description: A lot of people try Accutane after years of struggling. In a lot of cases it's effective against Pityrorsporum Folliculitis since the yeast thrive on oily skin. However, it's not always effective and some people on this board has experinced that their Pityrosporum Folliculitis has come back after the course of Accutane.
- Research/information:
- Products: Ask your dermatologist if you want this drug.
Does diet, hygiene or physical activity affect Pityrosporum Folliculitis? When it comes to diet and Pityrosporum Folliculitis I'm not an expert. It's always hard to know if something is breaking you out or not. Some people say the fungus feed on sugar, but I have yet to see any hard evidence supporting this. So when it comes to general diet guidelines to help treat Pityrosporum Folliculitis there is a long way to go.
However, there are several things that you can eat which should help to treat the condition from inside. This is a great
list of natural antifungalsPityrosporum Folliculitis often affects athletes. This could be due to the sweating, rubbing from clothes etc. However I don't think working out and sweating makes PF worse if you take a cool shower right after you sweat using a medicated cleanser.
Some people on this board feel that the
Pityrosporum Folliculitis/acne increases due to bodybuilding. . I'm not sure about the direct connection between working out and Pityrosporum Folliculitis. The reason people feel that they get PF due to bodybuilding could simple be that they sweat a lot, wear to tight clothing or experience rubbing from weight bars or machines. I work out a lot myself an for a long time I tought Pityrorsporum Folliculitis were a result of that, but I have now realised that I manage to keep it under control by taking a cool shower right afterwards and use a medicated cleanser. However, I will break out if I go days with physical activity and no showering.
What is your experience with Pityrosporum Folliculitis?Started getting what I tought was acne on my forehead around december/january 2006/2007. I used hair care products full of shitty ingredients and had long hair that touched my forehead. This caused several papules/pastules. However, the damage was done, and now I didn't want to cut my hair to reveal my shitty forehead. After a while I cut my hair and stopped using any products in it, but the problem persisted and got worse.
During the following months I tried Dan's regimen, several diet changes, washes and more. However nothing seemed to do any good for my forehead.
Summer 2007 I went on vacation and was in the sun for hours each day. I got a nice tan and all my acne on my forehead "cleared up". What I actually was doing was damaging my skin and disguising all the red marks behind a nice tan. I still regret this to the very day since it made my red marks stay for ages. At that time I hadn't acne on my body at all(just some spots on the top of my back). However, I got a pretty severe sunburn, and a lot of dead skin on my shoulders and upper back. A couple of weeks later I started getting "acne" on my shoulders, upper back and chest. Mostly I got Pastules and what looked like whitehead on my chest(see the last picture under pictures) and the little deeper kind of pastules/papules on my shoulders/upper back. Mostly it only itched on the upper back and sometimes on the chest. However the itch was far from irritating and was never really a problem.
Through the winter(2007(September)-2008(January)) I didn't do much to the problem. I was hoping it would go away on it's own, and it was winter so I didn't have to reveal my upper body. When the summer got nearer I realised this shit wasn't going away, and I started trying different kind of products. After a while I started vitamin B5. It worked well on my forehead, but didn't do much for my upper body. Read my progress on this in
my logAround april 2008 I started reading about Pityrosporum Folliculitis, and I soon realised this was what I had. Since then I've spent countless hours researching the subject. Started using Head & Shoulders, but without great results. After a while I also started using Mandelic Acid and it began to clear up. However it didn't hold the folliculitis in check and soon I satrted a new topical regimen including a Sulphur/Salicylic Acid soap(sal3.com) and Daktarin Gold(Ketoconazole 2%) cream. it worked well for a while, but the PF soon started to occur again.
The next thing on the agenda was Propylene Glycol which seemed to work great for the first couple of days/the first week, but as I had previously experienced PF is a bitch and after 3 weeks I still got spots on my chest and shoulders/upper back.
September 11th I started Itraconazole 200 mg/day and a new chapter in my treatment history is about to begin.
Without this forum I would have never realised that it's Pityrosporum Folliculitis I have, and I would probably still be struggling with different kind of acne treatments. It's about time I give something back to this community, and I hope this post will help other members.
If I can help one person to get clear by creating this FAQ it's all worth it.
Good luck!

Gold Bond, Gold Bond, Gold Bond!
(edited, I thought Baby Powder and Gold Bond were the same thing =/ stupid me)My back had been breaking out for the past few months out of nowhere. I never had body acne in my life, only facial acne so it was quite surprising!
As you can see its pretty much cleared up minus a few moderate sized ones. And alot of those bumps on my back are actually moles, so be sure to decipher between the two! Hehe.
I use the normal Gold Bond Body Powder. the zinc in it heals the skin as well as keep it dry, thus preventing the acne from forming and healing your current marks at the same time.

Hope you guys like it! It works. And excuse my body in the pics, I kinda let myself go lately and gained some weight. =/ But I'm losing it as we speak.

The order of the pics is from left to right, worst to best.
The first pic is from 2 weeks ago. The second pic is from a week ago. The third pic is today.

Hey guys
I dont pop into this forum much anymore - since I cleared up my acne I really haven't had the need - but I thought I'd pass on my experience to hopefully help some of you guys out there still struggling with acne.
Quick history on my acne before I pass on my personal bacne cure - I had pretty serious acne for 17 years (I'm 31) and had it on my face and back - the acne on my back was cystic and quite nasty whilst my face was generally less cystic.
My face has cleared up with the regimen (I use a lot less BP now than prescribed but it seems to keep my acne at bay, amazing considering I had used BP since day one but not knowing the appropriate way to apply it meant years of nasty facial acne).
My back resisted all attempts to rid it of acne - I tried accutane (was too harsh and I ended up sunburnt all the time back in Australia where I grew up so I gave up) and I tried a number of expensive topicals that did virtually nothing, I'd kind of given up hope an resigned myself to a life of bacne when I read about using vinegar on your face to get rid of hyperpigmentation so I thought I'd give it a go to get rid of the red marks on my back that had formed as a result of the cysts and would stay for weeks if not months before being joined by new fresh red marks.
So off to the supermarket I went and the only vinegar I could find was Japanese rice wine vinegar so I bought it home and tried it (I found it worked best by using it with a bit of Tea-Tree oil), well the results were amazing, within two weeks my back was clear of spots and the marks had faded significantly within three weeks. I have to say I was stunned. The truly strange thing is that its been almost a year since I first started using it (at the time nightly) my back is completely clear and now I no longer need to use it as regularly, I probably apply it once a week if that and my back stays acne free. I still have the original 375ml bottle from last year which shows how little I need to use these days.
If you've made it this far through this long post I'd like to say please give it a try (the smell can take a bit of getting used to but believe me its worth it) and thanks for listening and I wish you all the best in your fight with acne.
Good luck, hope it works for you like it worked for me.
M.

It's summer time and I never want to take my shirt off. =[ My back is clearing up for the most part, just by itself. But it's been there for a good 3 years and has left some pretty hideous scars.

A little history: I had severe acne (face, back, and chest) in my teens and didn't get treated until my late teens. I got the max dosage of accutane. After that the improvement was phenomenal. Over the next 8 years I would get the occasional pimple every now and then, but nothing serious.
But now I believe it is getting worse, so I am going to the dermatologist. Any new treatments that have evolved in 8 years or are we still in the same place? What kind of questions do I ask my doctor?
I don't think I want to get back on accutane, so I am hoping he will prescribe something milder. Also, I have a lot of body and face scars, to the point where I won't take off my shirt in public. Any treatments worth asking about for that?

So much has gone on lately. To make a long story short I'm under a lot of stress and emotional garbage that I've been breaking out yet again!
But to make matters worse I discovered these teeny tiny pimple-like things on my chest area. They don't become cysts or anything, but they're just there... kinda look like rashes. Can be a little itchy at times, but not really. And now... they've spread to my neck.
At first I was treating them as if they were rashes. Put a little hydrocortisone, but nothing. So I thought they were pimples. Doesn't seem to make them budge. Does anybody know what they are and how to get rid of them? I don't have enough high-necked shirts. I keep wearing the same ones over and over again.
Any ideas?

Hello. Since I have been young i have had spots on my legs, which then spread to my arms, lower back, stomach and onto my chest.
On my legs they are mostly black heads being slightly red and with nearly every one with an ingrown hair (not sore or itchy at all).
On my arms I have mostly black heads and also small, puss filled bumps (My arms are also quite rough, i use E45 cream.)
On my chest, they are all small puss filled bumps, not red at all and on my lower back, from what I can see are small, black heads much like what are on my legs.
The thing is, I dont have this problem with my face.

I was just crying my eyes out because this is so frusterating. My mom cant really afford to buy all the things for the regimen on this site. So I was wondering.. are there any ways for me to clear my back up for cheap? Its summer and I'm too self concious about my back acne to wear anything that reveals my back. For a week or so I went with tanktops that didnt touch my back and my hair up in a bun. (home all week) And my back acne cleared up. There wasnt one pimple. But just recently I went to get my hair cut and i wore a regular shirt (yes, it was tight and i know thats the reason why) that covered my back acne. When i got home I was stupid and i didnt take the shirt off and wash my back. I kept it on all night. And before i knew it i had at least 20 pimples all over my back. I'm thirteen and I havent even started my period yet. I dont exactly know what to do. Right now i've been wearing tank tops that dont cover my back acne and wearing my hair up in a bun, and tanning. But i only tanned yesterday and today. I got my hair cut 3 days ago. I want to be able to hang out with my friends and not come home to a back covered in acne bc I was wearing a tight shirt. Please help? ( please excuse the bra strap in this picture. )

Hi all : )
I've suffered with acne on my back and shoulders since i was about 16 .....im 38 now ! and rather than go away with age as i thought it might ... its on my chest and moving down a bit towards my belly button a little (acne's great isnt it !

) after trying most things (havent tried accutane and would personally rather chop off my middle nut than try it !!) i've found that a silly recipe i found in one of my mums old natural cures books called 100 uses for apple cider vinegar (or something like that) has worked the best so far and best of all uses natural ingredients

....
its a mixture of......
1 part honey (i use munuka honey +5)
1 part white flour
& 2 parts organic apple cider vinegar mixed into a paste.....
it really seems to control my bacne which scars my whole back and id deffinetly recomend others to try it !!! i put it on in the morning and before i go to bed, the main downside (theres always a downside) is that you have to sleep in a t-shirt to stop you sticking to your bed like a sticky toffee !! but no pain no gain i spose : )
althogh it's cleared up my active acne and controls it really well and naturally...it doesnt get rid of the red marks and scars !!! and after comming back off of my holidays ive come to the conclussion that the only thing thats going to get me to a completly clear back is the sunshine as my back, shoulders and chest are not only masked by having a tan but the suns rays have also worked towards getting rid off any remainding issues...
the sunbed problem
----------------------
sorry to have taken so long to get to my point but i thought ppl might like to try my acv method ...living in England means i have zero chance of getting any chance of getting any natural sunlight : ( so was thinking of using sunbeds instead ! i dont have acne on my face so was thinking of maybe covering up my face with a towel, and trying to go just enought to keep reducing the remainding acne issues without turning my skin into leather !! hehe
i'd really love to hear of anyones experiences with combining topical solutions like my acv method with using sunbeds ?? how many times do you use them a week ? did you use a lotion on your skin before using them ?? does anyone tan there backs and use a fake tan for there face ?? does it look alright ?? ect ....
sorry to write such a long post for my first post ....thanks sincerly for any reply's as they would really help me decide wether to start using sun beds on a regular basis thanks in adv : )

Greeting fellow sufferers!
First off, my heart goes out to all of you. I know the pain and angst involved with all sorts of skin ailments.
Here's my tale: I have had skin issues since I was an infant (I'm now 48). My mother told me I had cradle cap as an infant and my earliest memories include pimples. As I child I had pimples in my arm pits and in my crotch pits. They were always cystic in nature and I spent countless hours squeezing them. I know, yech but it had to be done. As I got older I developed what was diagnosed as Folliculitis. Specifically, small surface pimples on my back, arms and sometimes legs and ass. (sound familiar)
I battled this for years and was even sent home from grammar school once because the nurse thought I had chicken pox. Not too humiliating huh? I suffered with it throughout High School too and wasnt allowed in the swimming pool because of it. Again, only slightly mortifying.
Like most sufferers, it gets worse in summer and clears up in winter. I learned to live with it my entire life. In the meantime, I saw dozens of Dermatologists and took piles of antibiotics and it never ever cleared it up.
When I got into my 40s, it started to get worse! For the first time, it or something seemed to move to my face! I would get these localized large bumps that seemed like hives and itched like hell. And then they would weep and get bigger. Yech again. I also would get cyst like pimples in different areas on my face. I was diagnosed again with Folliculitis - and of course given all the wrong medicines. This has gone on for the last seven years and has caused great heartache and concern. Particularly because I am an actor and the last thing you need is weeping things on your face. My god, it's humiliating.
About a year ago, I discovered the existence of Pityrosporum Folliculitis and I seemed to be the poster boy of it. Excluding the cystic acne I was prone to my whole life, the pimples on my back that I got at summer time clinched it. That and the fact that I never responded to antibiotics.
I've had a great dermatologist for the past few years and 7 months ago, I pitched to her that I would like to try Accutane to once and for all cure me. I was horrified of the reported side effects but really wanted to give a go as a last ditch attempt. So she green lit the prescription and I completed a five month cycle. I had the usual drying side effects, plenty of aches and pains, trouble sleeping but thank god none of the psychological ones. However, it was no picnic and I couldnt wait to finish it!
Concerning my skin, my back completely cleared up by the first month and stayed clear. My face also cleared up to the point where it looks like I am wearing makeup! It was nothing short of a miracle. This was the first time in 48 years I was pimple free! I even rejoiced being able to hug and swim with my two year old daughter. Elation to the highest degree!!
I might also add that a month after I finished the Accutane my eyes started to be extremely light sensitive and I started to be in excruciating pain. I went to an Opthamologist and was diagnosed with corneal ulcerations (that's holes in my eyeballs!). The doctor was furious that I was on Accutane and said I was on too high of a dose. My eyes have healed and my skin is perfect and I am the happiest man in the world!
I even have been having nightmares that I have pimples again - then I wake up and I'm so relieved I could cry.
And then guess what happened three days ago? My back completely broke out again! I was having a very stressful day and by night time I seemed to have a few pimples on my shoulders and neck. Nothing I thought. Then the next day, worse and the next day, even worse. Now I even have four of the super itchy large bumps on my face. Not cystic so I will assume it is part of the return of the Pityrosporum Folliculitis.
My god, talk about a steep fall! I really thought I was cured and I went through hell to get cured and now it's back a mere two months after finishing accutane! Talk about depressing! And I cant afford to be depressed with a two year old who is entering an intense crying faze.
My next course of action is to see my Derm in four days and try the anti-fungal medicine for the first time. I'm hoping I stay cyst free and this is a minor episode but I fear it is back for good. Kind of like the opposite of an old friend.
I'm open to hear anyone's thoughts!!
Best,
Steve

At the tender young age of 28, I'm still struggling with acne. In 2003 I started buying the BP from this website and generally I don't have to worry about my face anymore, although I always have at least one of those suckers to deal with. The other problem I've been ignoring throughout the years but have recently started trying to tackle is chest acne and some backne.
Anyway, during a 6-month mole check at my dermatologist last December, he noticed how bad my chest and back were starting to get, and he put me on doxycycline for it. That didn't seem to work, and made me feel generally off. So I stopped that.
I started experimenting with coconut oil because I read it was anti-bacterial and can help prevent body acne. What a mistake... worst breakout ever within 10 days of using it.
Not sure why, but on a whim I picked up some J&J Lavender natural (talc-free) baby powder. After the shower, I started putting a fair amount all over my upper torso before getting dressed. Within two weeks, all my problems were gone, and the existing acne seemed to dry up and scab away.
I guess I figured if oil made the problem worse (I have oily skin) maybe I'd try to "dry up the problem" with powder. It has been six months of acne-free upper torso for me.
I googled for baby powder fixing acne problems but all I got was bad results. People say that using talc powder has been linked to cancer, and using a natural corn starch powder can actually feed the acne bacteria, clog pores, and make the problem worse. Nobody recommends this.
Today I had another dermatologist six-month mole check, and I told him it was baby powder making my skin clear and not his doxycycline he gave me (which I stopped taking two weeks after I started) and he almost laughed at me.
Anyway, I am not crazy. Corn starch baby powder works great for me as long as I don't skip days. I've not tried it on my face... my face is this perfect science (as I'm sure some acne veterans have) that I dare not mess with.
I'd like to know if any of you have tried corn starch baby powder (or just straight up corn starch) for body acne and have had results from it? Positive, negative? I can't be the only one in the world.
My theory is that the powder somehow keeps my skin dry, maybe absorbs the oil, or maybe clogs my pores to keep bad bacteria out. Not to mention it feels nice on the skin too. Skin doesn't stick to itself when you put this stuff on... after all, that is the main intention of baby powder.
My body acne is mostly small stuff that is just under the skin... I usually use my finger nail and scrape them and they make a little pop. Before applying the powder everyday, I used to have about 20-30 of these spots on my chest, on my shoulders, and my upper back.

Hi Everyone,
After searching through lots of posts on here- it seems nobody has experienced the same thing as me.
I have these bumps on my shoulders that vary in size- they are pink/red/white and are hard to touch (like lumps of gristle under the skin). I cant really remember when these lumps appeared- they have been there about 3 years or somthing now- occasionally get worse..like more imflammed and then go back down- but the lump it self never goes

(
I am female and obviously this does alot to my self esteem as i cant wear strappy/summery tops as these lumps are really noticable

(
I do suffer with fairly bad bacne- and also get lots of spots on my face- with the occasional cyst. I have recently started dianette contraception pill as i am going to start on Roaccutane in a few weeks....(which im dreading after reading some threads on here!!!!!!!)
Just wondered if anyone else suffers with these lumps/bumps and if roaccutane might help them flatten atleast??
Thanks for reading

) Hope someone can help! xx

I have suffered from body acne for a while now, and I have tried everything from the Neutrogena body washes to twisting my body in odd forms to get bp onto my back. Nothing ever worked well, and the bp ended up staining my clothes from my back. Maybe I should've used a stronger bp concentration on my back (I used Dan's bp gel and maybe that was too light), but the results weren't what I wanted and so I began searching for a new way to get rid of my body acne.
I searched the forums for help with body acne and came across several threads regarding Dial Antibacterial Body Wash and its effects on acne. Many people in the forums said it helped their body acne and cleared up their back and chest, so I thought, why not, I'll give it a shot. The body wash does not contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. The active ingredient is triclosan, which is the antibacterial agent that gives Dial its "antibacterial" name. I didn't get my hopes up or anything, since a lot of things that have worked for others didn't work for me. However, I was pleasantly surprised, because this one worked for me. Not only did it work, the Dial body wash worked extremely well. My back cleared up significantly, as well as minimal problem areas on my chest. I was so surprised that something as simple as using a certain brand of what seems like ordinary body wash could work better than using bp on my back and other treatments.
It's a joy to use the Dial body wash in the shower too because it moisturizes very well, leaves my skin soft, and smells great. (I bought it in the scent Spring Water.) I was on an overnight trip at a hotel when my friend was complaining about the hotel soap and how it was making his skin crack. He noticed my skin wasn't dry like his, so he asked me if he could borrow my body wash. I let him borrow it, and the next day he said his skin was no longer cracking and he said that when he was using it, he was thinking, "Oh man, this is so great!" Then my roommate said, "Yeah, when you use it and get out of the shower, you smell realllyyyy good."
You just can't go wrong with this. If it doesn't work as well as you'd like on your bacne, it will give you moisturized skin and make you smell great. I am here to say that it does work on bacne; at least, it did for me. I've used this for two months and while it would be a lie to say that my back is totally, completely clear, I'm happy to say that all that's left are minor bumps and minor red marks leftover from my past bad breakouts. Thanks to Dial Antibacterial Body Wash, I no longer get the big pimples on my back that I used to get all the time. If you were considering buying this before or consider it now, I urge you to just give it a try. Hopefully it'll work as well for you as it worked wonders on me.

Just like many of yall I spent so much of my time trying products, searching the internet for information, and being horribly embarrassed by my backne.
I had never had any type of acne problem in my whole life. Maybe a zit every once in a while on my face but nothing worth complaining about and certainly never anything on my body. Then when I was 17 I mysteriously started getting backne. It first started off a couple pimples here and there and then it got horrible. My entire upper back and shoulders was all hyperpigmentation scars and new pimples. It was simply atrocious. I tried to track down the cause and never could. I have platinum hair and have to use heavy conditioners and I thought maybe that was clogging my pores so I stopped using that, no use. I changed detergents, no results. I tried every soap and body wash on the planet, still nothing. I went to the dermatologist a few months before prom hoping he could get me better so I could wear my backless dress with pride. He completely destroyed my back. He prescribed me antibiotics, Benzaclin, and Tazorac. In patches, half my back was horribly itchy thick callousy cracking skin I couldn't even feel touch on and the other half was itchy and disgustingly weepy to the point I had to change my shirts and bedsheets every 15 minutes (no joke) because they had become sopping. I stopped his regimen and started using this bodywash my grandma's dermatologist had recommended to her- Cetaphil. That stuff is AMAZING (and you can get it at Wal-Mart). It made my skin so soft and completely cleared up the mess my dermatologist had created. Also, it warded off my pimples except for one or two here and there which was a DRASTIC improvement. Then I decided to hit the tanning salon to get a little color for prom. That's the true magic. Within one week of only tanning about 10 minutes every other day my entire back was clear and I haven't had a SINGLE pimple since. I'm a natural blonde with blue eyes and fair skin so of course I've been told the "Tanning's Bad For You" speech about 50 billion times in my life. However, I'm also pre-med AND I managed a tanning salon for two years so I know ALOT about it. Do your homework. Skin cancer is rare to begin with. In the fluke event you DO get it, there are three types only one of which is deadly which of course is the notorious melanomas. They only account for about 2% of skin cancer. Then, only if that treatment fails do you actually die. So, your chances of dying of skin cancer are severely unlikely. Most people that get skin cancer, it's been proven, are people with professions in the sun like fishermen or landscapers. Also, everything is fine in moderation. I've seen firsthand the type of people that are asking for skin cancer. They come in to the salon and tan for 20-30 minutes. Then they leave and since by law a salon is only allowed to tan each customer once within a 24-hour period, they go to two or three other salons where they simultaneously hold memberships. Then once they make the rounds of the salons, they go home and lay out for a couple hours. Every day. For 25 years. Those are the people that skew the already exaggerated and misconstrued statistics. I've seen them with my own two eyes. Once again, read the facts and you'll find tanning has cured many many many cases of severe psoriasis. Take my advice or leave it. I'm living proof that Cetaphil in the shower at night and 10 minutes under a low-level tanning lamp a couple times a week works. Tanning that little will do absolutely no harm to you. You'd get more damage from being outside for thirty minutes. For those of you who think you've reached the end of the rope, have tried everything like I had, and are willing to try one more thing so you can wear halter tops and pretty dresses and tank tops- try it. Give it a shot. You have nothing to lose. It's cheap and it works. I have no scars whatsoever and haven't seen a pimple in months, and it is WAYYYYY cheaper than those horribly damaging medicines my doctor was prescribing me.

I have some acne on my back and chest. I've been using 10%BP for a long time now on it, and it keeps my face clear and keeps my bacne and chacne under control, but I just can't get ride of the marks on my body. I guess I have some pretty tough skin because I don't experience drying and flaking. I also was using some SA body wash, but it did practically nothing. Would starting AHA help clear it up?
