Ok i had my follow up appt with my endo doctor today regarding my hyperthyrodism. I have made a log about it here:
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/endocrino...tml&hl=JAYQI am going to link these two together because of what i was diagnosed with today, following my Radioactive scan results.
My scan results came back showing that my thyroid had a very low radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU). This usually occurs from either eating lots of iodine (seafood) a day prior or having a recent CT scan before the test making the thryoid scan invalid. (Low RAIU).
Or, in my case of having thyroiditis. I was told by my endo that any treatment that i had taken for my acne could have caused this, it is rare he said but def a possibility. So i got to thinking that the only prescription med i had taken for a long period of time (around 6 months) was minocycline.
So i got home and did some research and did find that minocycline can cause abnormal thyroid after long periods of use, again it states its rare, but rare can happen.
Thyroiditis starts off as hyperthyroidism which i was orginally diagnosed with for 1-3months. Then it will go into hypothyrodism for 1-3months and then eventually level out back to normal thyroid fucntion. I will have my blood drawn again in a month to see if my levels are starting to go back down toward the hypo end. Hopefully it is.
So i thought i would post this here to give everyone a heads up if you were planning on taking mino or have been on it a while.

Okay, so I have been on Solodyn for 2 months now. I have had no results, It's acually made my acne worse. I should also note that I am on Yaz (have been on Yaz for a month now) and I apply Epiduo every night to my face. I only have moderate acne on my chin. So i'm pretty sure I have hormonal acne. My derm. told me that she wants me to switch to Dorxy? But, I havn't gave Solodyn a full 3 months to even see if it will clear me up. Plus, I don't want to have to start all over again with another med. Any advice would be great.

Hi guys,
I have been taking Doxycycline for 2 months, and just stopped recently for around 2 weeks. In the 2 months no new acne has formed, what my face had were just red marks and possibly a few scars.
Now after I have stopped taking them, I found a whitehead on my face today. Is it safe, and advisable to resume using doxycycline? Will it be less effective given that I have already stopped taking them for 2 weeks?

The prescription pill that I was described to take when I went to the dermatologist was doxycycline. I took it infrequently at time and more stringently at other times. I mean, sometimes I forgot to take it or whatever. I never usually skipped more than 2 doses at a time and usually it was not very frequently that this happened. Now, I actually was on Doryx which is a time released version of doxycycline. I took one int he morning and one at night. Basically, I might have noticed a very slight lessening in the number of breakouts and the frequency that they occurred. But overall my summation of this prescription is that it did absolutely nothing for me. I do not know if it was because I did not take it every single time I was supposed to or what. I did not miss that many doses really. Let's put it this way, I took the pills fairly often and as much as I did take them I should have noticed something if not complete success. I could not tell if it was doing anything. The medicine was supposed to tone down the oiliness and limit your bodies production of sebum. I still got pimples with whiteheads and they were full of sebum and my skin was pretty oily. And I took this medicine for years. So, I stopped taking it because it was costing $50 a bottle and the pills were a pain to swallow two times a day.
So, who else was on doxycycline or even better doryx? What is your opinion of this? Did it help you at all?
I have noticed that it seems that more people are prescribed accutane than doxycycline. I have never tried accutane.

Has anyone had any luck with Doxycycline after Tetra and Mino lost their effectiveness?
If these side effects persist, I may be stopping Tane early and need to know my options. I have used Tetracycline, Minocycline, Septra, Keflex, and most recently Solodyne...
By the way, I have cystic acne.

I imagine this has been discussed hundreds of times before but just thought I'd share my (short) experience with it. After visiting a new doctor and telling him of my skin problems, he prescribed me this. I was quite happy to try it as I'd always wanted to get on sorm form of antibiotic, since my acne is very well spread and difficult and time consuming to treat topically. Plus the topicals I had tried were having very little effect.
I have been taking it for a week (500mg twice a day), and I don't know whether it is a complete coincidence, but my face has cleared up dramatically. To the point where I have to double check I'm seeing things. Whether this is going to last I do not know. Not seen much improvement with the body acne though. I've just seem to have taken to it, on my face at least. Hopefully my body acne will improve further down the line as I've only been taking it a week.
Any one else had good results with it?

I was on Tetracycline but it wasn't clearing up my acne. Last week my doctor prescribed me Minocycline. Ever since the 4th of July I have been experiencing severe non-stop dizziness/vertigo. I don't get naseous or feel any pain or anything but I feel completely off balance. It's hard to describe but I feel like my head weighs a ton and like something is constantly pushing me downwards and like there's all this pressure inside of my head. If I lean to one side or the other I feel like I'm going to fall over in that direction. I feel better if I lay down and don't move my head at all.
I told my doctor and they told me to stop taking the antibiotic which I did three days ago but I am still experiencing the constant dizziness. I went to the doctor 2 days ago. They checked my blood pressure and checked to make sure I don't have a ear or sinus infection. I don't. Everything's fine. They prescribed me Meclizine to treat the dizziness. It helps somewhat but mostly just makes me extremely drowsy. I am starting to get concerned because the dizziness will not go away. What if there is something seriously wrong with me?
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Thoughts/suggestions?

Been on Bactrim for almost 2 years as a bacne/minor face acne sufferer. I have stopped and it seems to have had a minor flare up since the 2 weeks ago but ill give it another week or two before i start again.
Reason I stopped is 1. prescription ran out 2. wary of long term side effects.
Can anyone give me any info on long term use of bactrim? I had _NO_ side effects while on the drug. Only reason I stopped is because Im wary of what its doing to me...is it a ticking time bomb? Am I safe for another 2 years?

hi guys,
So yesterday i had a look at my nose and a sun spot had appeared there overnight. Now i make it a point to never go out in the sun, i even tried to avoid walking outside during the day time and always cover up.
But every time i go on tetracyclines for a long period of time this seems to happen. This happened to me before on minocycline and i had to lazer the freckle off my nose but that entailed stopping the antiobiotics and the pimples came back. Now is seems i have to do it all over again!
It seems i'm fighting a war on two fronts.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?!

Has anyone else had this? or is my skin just particularly freakish?

Hi everyone, new member here!
I live in the UK and am considering antibiotics after years of experimenting with over the counter topicals and various diet changes but would like to get an idea of other people's experiences with them in my country. So if you have tried them, an indication of how easy it easy to get a hold of them, how much they cost and of course how well they work would be fantastic. Thank you!

So I've been taking 200mg doxycyclin a day for about 4 or 5 months. It was working moderately well, but now it is starting to fail me. What should I ask my doctor to prescribe me next to try?

Ive had bad acne since I was about 16, I didnt do anything about it until it was too late and now have pretty bad scarring on my face.
The face acne subcided to what I would say is "mild" I only get pimples from shaving now with a few tiny un-noticable ones on my forhead sometimes. But the back acne was still bad and for that reason I decided about 2.5 years ago to go on Bactrim DS.
It worked great. All I would have is 3-4 small ones which would go away in a few days. Sometimes there was none at all. Finally there was light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully one day soon Ill have the confidence to take my shirt off in public.
But after being on it for this long I've decided to stop taking Bactrim, give it a break(hopefully forever).
Its been about 5 days now and nothing really noticeable except a few teeny whiteheads on my forhead.
Was I wise to stop taking Bactrim? Are there long term side effects? I do seem to be quite tired this past 2 years which I think must be the only really side effect I noticed in the short term. Im just hoping my body does not become reliant on the bactrim and then I may never get cured.
Fingers crossed it wont flare up any worse, if it stays like it is I will be content.

I was prescribed minocycline 50mg about 6 months ago. It pretty much kept me clear for about a month and i had no breakouts at all, but then my acne came back like normal and it was not helping anymore. I was taking 2 a day. I told my docs nurse that i quit taking it for the reason it stopped working and she said well we can actually up the dosage to 100mg.
Would that even work and if it did wouldnt i just become immune to that again eventually?

ive been on solodyn for months now, and im supposed to end....my derm wants to switch me to another antibiotic but i just dont want to anymore. I'm really scared though bec. when she tried weaning me off solodyn my skin went crazy...so i had to go back. But the thing is, I don't want to take medication anymore...but i want to get rid of my acne. Is it possible for me to do that by taking topicals and no medication? im thinking if i use stridex or an AHA daily...and then spot treat with duac that would be enough, but i dont know...what are your opinions?

I've been taking Solodyn 90mg/day off and on for almost a year now. Consistently for the last 4 months though. I use it combined with benzaclin daily. I have not seen any results thus far. I've had moderate acne pretty much all over my face for the past 4 years. Is it time to switch to accutane? A few of my friends have spoken highly of it. Not to mention Solodyn makes me very tired to the point of interfering with school.

Just read the insert that says dosage should be based on weight. If you're on/have been on Solodyn - was yours based on your weight, or did the MD prescribe more/less? I weigh less than my rec'd prescription and am now concerned.

hi, i went to a new dermatologist yesterday and i'm generally not sure how i feel about the visit. it felt very rushed and generic. she barely looked at my face and seemed like she was giving me her usual rundown of suggestions when people go in for adult acne.
i'm 26 and have had moderate/severe acne since college. lately i've been having painful cysts and i tried to explain that to her, but she didn't seem to hear me much at all. i've tried doxycycline once before and it was working slightly, but had to go off because my insurance ran out haha.
so i'm ready to start again because over-the-counter things have not been working. i'm just wondering if she gave me a good combination of products. here is what she gave me perscriptions for:
doxycycline 2x a day (i dont remember the dosage)
ziana (clindamycin phosphate 1.2% and tretinoin .025%) for night
evoclin (clindamycin phosphate foam 1%) for the morning
any ideas? thank you!

I'm taking doxycycline, which works really well and has cleared up, I'd say, 98% of my acne. I still have a few spots on my chin. In the past I developed pill esophagitis from the doxycycline, and I'm afraid this will happen again, esp if I up the dosage (i'm taking 100 mg/day but i'd like to increase to 200mg).
How do other antibiotics compare to doxycycline? Is there anything better out there that people have taken long term?
Thanks very much!

For a couple of years now I have had little black bumps on my skin, accompanied by small red splotches (for lack of a better word). I rarely get whiteheads and have never had cystic acne, but these bumps become extremely noticeable in the sun and have made me pretty self-conscious.
My dermatologist prescribed 50mg of Doxycycline each day. I've been taking it for one month and one week now and have seen no change whatsoever. Sometimes I even take it without eating anything at all, and I don't get the nausea that is supposed to accompany the practice. I go out in the sun and I'm not burned.
I'm confused as to why not even the ill effects of this drug have presented themselves.
Any ideas?
Thanks
-Troy

My teen has taken 150 mg. doxycycline hydrate ( 75 mg. twice a day) for about three weeks. It seems to make him very tired, irritable and depressed. I wonder why tetracycline wasn't tried first. He tried minocycline for a week or so first, but that also seems to have the effect of causing fatigue and bad moods. He has some cystic acne. I wonder why we couldn't just try tetracycline several times a day. Has anyone heard of this reaction to doxycycline and minocycline? Why couldn't he try tetracycline with use of retin a gels and benzaclin and pro-activ products. Please give me any thoughts. I would be very grateful!

Hello, so, I've been prescribed erythromycin (two 250 mg tablets, twice a day), retin-a, benzoyl peroxide 5% wash, and a clindamycin gel for about 3 months over summer and I got a call from my derm asking about my 3 month check up. I'm about 85-90% clear but I still get stubborn acne along my jawline and one or two cysts in random spots. So, she prescribed me doxycycline in place of the erythromycin for winter because it's both stronger and is easier to use in not-so-sunny weather.
I'm just wondering if I'm going to have to go through the two months or so of initial breakouts with doxycycline like I did when I started my prescriptions over summer. If so, I would much rather stay with some stubborn jaw acne that is not very noticeable then have a completely gross face for two months during school. Or, were the initial breakouts due to my retin-a/clindamycin gel and will/never had anything to do with the oral pills. I would really love some insight on this topic.
(I will be picking up the doxy tomorrow so I'm not sure how much I've been prescribed)

I started using a generic form of bactrim this summer (I think around August 20-something). It's been almost a month and my acne is worse than before. I don't understand why this is happening or why the drug isn't working. I've been following this routine:
morning:
take my morning pill
night:
wash my face with Cetaphil, use alcohol free toner, finish with Cetaphil lotion
The only component I can think of that's different between now and this summer is that i was working out almost everyday during the summer.... I don't know if this post even goes in the forum I chose, I'm just confused on my acne in general lol!

Hi all,
I've been taking minocycline 100mg x2 a day for about 6 weeks, and there hasn't been a whole lot of improvement.
How long does it take before it helps?
thanks
