I got a PM from someone who was confused about whether AHA was a required element of the regimen. It is not. I love Eucerin Skin Renewal, which contains lactic acid--a very mild AHA, but AHA is not at all required. In fact, glycolic acid, which is the usual form of AHA, is usually too much for people when they're first starting out on the regimen.

I have been trying lots of samples of moisturizers from various manufacturers in an attempt to make a replacement moisturizer myself, and have found that AHA is not required for adequate moisturization. However, the various manufacturers who have been scurrying to make us a moisturizer have not hit on something that's as good as Eucerin yet. Some of the samples I've tried are too stinky, some are too thick, and some leave my face too tight. Therefore, to prevent severe flakiness in some people, I recommend the addition of AHA as discussed at http://www.acne.org/aha.html for the time being.

I'm going to try KissMyFace moisturizer as soon as I can get some and see what that's like. Since Eucerin was discontinued from Drugstore.com and I still haven't gotten my manufacturers to make the perfect replacement, we're gonna have to try some new ones 'til we find a good solution. In the meantime, if your skin gets super dry with whatever other moisturizer you're using, the addition of AHA might help, but is in no way required.

I was reading about what Glycolic acid is and where is comes from and if it is a 'mild' AHA, another thing to remember is that is a natural ingredient. I think it sounds scary when people hear the word 'acid' in relation to putting it on your face. At least this has been my experience.

There are plenty of good quality cleaners and moisturizers that have Glycolic acid as an ingredient. I know some are expensive too. Look around other dermatology sites and even stores that sell dermatology products have information online - along side the stuff they are selling. The 'two birds/one stone' idea. /J

I find that any AHA makes things worse for me. A good exfoliant (say once/twice a week) is just granulated sugar (no acids).

Decided to add some AHA into an order I just placed. I'm very interested in seeing how well it works.

so how was AHA+ worked for you guys? where did you put in your regimen?
------------
My Regimen:
purpose gentle cleansing wash in shower morning and night
neutrogena on the spot(2.5%BP) used 5 minutes after cleansing morning and night.
neutrogena for combination skin moisturizer used 10-15 minutes after cleansing, and treatment.
*On June 6, 2009 (66 days on regimen) I switched moisturizers to Eucerin Original Moisturizing Lotion. I made this switch because its all they had in the store when i ran out of my neutrogena one. I liked the neutrogena one and I reccommend it but I do like eucerin more(takes care of all flakes/dryness)

Status: started april 1, 2009. Getting compliments on acne loss in school, but i still see acne which I think is just what acne sufferers tend to see even if there clear to others.
I just looked at pictures from the middle of the year and now I see the difference since starting the regimen. I really have cleared a lot!
september 29 2009. people tell me they dont notice my acne, I look in the mirror and always see a few pimples but nothing to bad. But I feel like every week I feel a new one come in. Overall im happy because ive cleared and people compliment me and school is so much better with good skin.

I have been doing the regimen for the past year, and saw remarkable results for the first six months or so, but then my skin started to get uncontrollably flaky and then started breaking out in large cyst type acne. I wasn't sure what I was doing differently or wrong, but decided to try to get the flakiness under control first. I saw on one of your messages that you recommended using AHA to help with dry skin. So, I tried it. I used just a generic brand that I found at Walgreens, and applied after the Benzoyl Peroxide, in the morning and before bed. It completely took care of the problem. I no longer have any flakiness, actually my skin feels softer than it ever has. And, thankfully, it completely got rid of the cystic acne I was getting as well. I also have used it as spot treatment when I notice a pimple about to start, and it really keeps it from developing into anything. don't know if this information could be helpful to anyone, but I thought I would put it out there. I I also wanted to thank you for putting out such a wonderful product that is actually affordable, and for putting out all of the helpful information for those who have struggled with acne.

I'm pretty sure it is normal. I think it's because since this moisturizer is natural and has many soothing ingredients it takes the sting out of the AHA. I may be wrong, but that's just what I think.

___________________________

I use the Kiss My Face Peaches & Creme 4% alpha-hydroxy and it doesn't sting at all. I was looking forward to buying the 8%, but I couldn't find it at whole foods and I'd rather not order it online so I just stuck with the 4% (which I'm guessing is a good thing, because then I would be on 2 high percentages of AHA in 2 products)

It's actually a very nice moisturizer and absorbs very well into my skin. The scent is really nice, and all natural.

I think once I run out of the 4%, I'm gonna go scouting for some 8%.. eusa_think.gif

When I used AHA it did leave my face irritated. I had red blotches all over my face but, it could be the fact that I have sensitive skin.

I have to give it a try
I heard that Using lemon and sugar as an exfoliator can prevent future break outs.
Does AHA do the same thing I know that it fades away The dark spots called hyper pigmentation

Well I finally bought some AHA+ to throw into my regimen. I am really hoping this is going to be finally it. I'm now 22, and my face is really starting to clear up. My face now looks comparable to when I was 16, when the acne problem was just beginning. I have been using BP for 4 years now. I've also been using M2 Skin Recovery Moisturizer since May. At first I was like meh... but now I swear by it. It'll probably be my long-term moisturizer long even after the red marks and acne fade.

My regimen is now...

Morning
- Dan's Gentle Cleanser
- Dan's BP
- M2 Skin Recovery Moisturizer

Night
- Dan's Gentle Cleanser
- Dan's BP
- Dan's AHA+

Eventually I would to remove BP in place of Mandelic Malic to hope with a bit of left over scarring. I'm almost done with a 8oz bottle, and I just received a 16oz bottle - hoping this one is the last! Dan's Gentle Cleanser - I will forever use that though.
