| Bottom line | Before I had the treatment, I had severe acne. Went in and they did the microderm abrasion before putting the levulan on... but because they'd squeezed me in, the rooms with the blue light/and or the cooler were full, so I waited two hours before they put me under. Sooo painful under the light. My face was almost purple and was hot for two days. All I could do was sit on a couch with a fan directly at my face. I blistered and peeled terribly. But after about a week, though I was still pink, the result was amazing. My skin was clearer than it had been in 10 years. The acne did start to return, so I had another treatment. This time no microderm abrasion and less time with the levulan on. Almost no result. Have had it done twice more with the microderm, and while my skin is not perfect, HUGE improvement. If nothing's worked for you, this is worth a try, but I strongly suggest getting the microderm first, and keeping the levulan on for as long as they'll let you. Bring tylenol. ;) |

| Cons | does not work |
| Bottom line | for the past two months, I did three treatments of Levulan photodynamic treatments every 2 weeks and in between i would get chemical peels. ALL BECAUSE my dermatologist told me that it would WORK. about 2000 dollars later...and NOTHING. my skin looks the same. believe me..I take pictures of my face everyday to see if theres any difference. and ZERO. do not waste your money on this |

| Pros | Reduction in cysts, mild fading of hyperpigmentation, some tightening of pores |
|---|---|
| Cons | Slight redness, being house-bound for 2 days |
| Bottom line | I had Levulan (30 min. incubation time) + Blu-U (10 min.) last week, and so far I'm cautiously optimistic. I've noticed that the cysts on my cheek as well as other spots on the chin dried up very quickly, and that some of the hyperpigmentation on my cheeks has faded. I've scheduled two more sessions at $200 each (I have 80% coverage for the Levulan) and am keeping my fingers crossed. After reading all the posts here, I was nervous about the discomfort involved. For me, pain, redness and swelling were minimal. The day of the procedure, i was very slightly red, but after that, I was back to normal. According to the doctor I consulted, he said that generally about two-thirds of the patients he sees leave satisfied with Levulan + Blu-U... |

| Pros | it is amazing! Do it if you have acne. I tried antibiotics, creams for over 10 years. Terrible. It went away some but I still had it. This is the only thing that works. Ask for a microderm before the ALA is set on your face. Also ask for IPL. |

| Bottom line | I did the blue-u light with the infrared light for 4 weeks, twice a week (one day blue, one day infrared) and can't say it worked. I also did one session of levulan with blue-u light and again, can't say it worked. I was fortunate to do these treatments in a study, so I didn't pay for them. I would recommend looking for laser centers that offer studies to try this, rather than paying. Accutane worked the best (though it dried up my sinuses) but recently learned you can take it in very low dosages, though for a much longer time. But with so many side affects, I would recommend 2.5% BP, mild cleanser (vanicream) a good moisturizer (nuetrogena healthy defense) and a health insurance plan where you can get injections from derm for cystic breakouts. Also, health reimbursement account for monthly chemical peels (as long as it's from a derm and a receipt for treatment of acne is provided) and a diet full of vegetables! |

Levulan in my opinion is a TOTAL SCAM AND WORTHLESS TREATMENT. MADE MY ACNE WORSE AFTER 2 TREATMENTS! I did two more after my doctor encouraged me to wait it out. $1,000 later, I still have bad acne and new acne scars from the horrible breakout after the 1st treatment. Bright red blotches on my face. I think the people who say they have great reactions are lying and work for dermatologists!

WOW!! I have read nothing but bad reactions from others and it surprises me because levulan was a miracle breakthrough for me. I was lucky enough to be a test patient. After one treatment, I never had another cyst come up again! I had a little swelling a lot of redness, but when it faded after two days, my pores were smaller and I did not have any more breakouts! I had been on ACcutane twice and tried everything topical. Nothing topical works! Levulan works at the root because it tames the over active sebacous glands!

I recently went off the birth control pill after 10 plus years and within 8 weeks I had cystic acne...I had no problem with acne prior. So I read about this Levulan tx in Bazaar magazine and was very excited. It has been difficult to find a physician who does this but after reading this message board perhaps that was lucky. Thank you for all your messages.

I would say that if you have tried many things to clear up your acne, and nothing works, it is worth a shot. I have also done one round of accutane about 7 years ago. This would be my best advice for acne treatment! It really works, if you are a candidate for it. My skin was totally clear for over 2 years!
