At the recommendation of my dermatologist, I paid about $1,000 for a Levulan treatment. The entire process turned out to be painful and humiliating. I was told that the redness (similar to a REALLY bad sunburn) and peeling would decrease after a few days and I'd be able to return to work. Although the redness faded somewhat, around the third day it looked like I had two huge red birthmarks on each of my cheeks. I ended up having to miss work and when I did return to work- everyone made comments on how red my face looked. Now two months later, I've noticed improvements in the clarity of my skin. My pore size is non-existant and my breakouts have decreased about 40%. However, if you're going to have this procedure done make sure you exhaust all your other cheaper options and you give yourself at least a week of downtime before you're able to show your face in public unless you like to answer questions like, "What happened to your face?" and "If you got a sunburn how come no other part of you is red?"

I had blue light done earlier this year: prob 6 reg treatments and one ALA. It was definitely a waste of money. I didn't notice any change in my skin, and paid around $1,000. Its basically like a tanning bed, except it doesn't have a the UVA that hurts your skin. Not recommended.

i had three sessions at 400$ a piece. My skin has always been very oily and i went into this procedure after having 7 microdermabrasions. The first time was horrific because i experienced great pain and discomfort. This was because my pores were SOO open. I had the 7 microderms, plus just went off vitamin A micro. I told docs but they told me it wouldnt be a problem... it was. Worst pain on my face EVER. my skin was SOOO RED and SWOLLEN and after a few days a thick, and i mean thick scab covered my entire face. It was like i was wearing one of those old hockey masks, ala friday the thirteenth. When my face peeled it too a lot of layers with it. My skin was actually smoothly and looked better than i could remember. I was worried about scarring but there wasnt any.. other than a small mark on my forehead. Long story short, i had two more treatments and my skin improved a lot. I also credit the acupunture that i started getting after the ALA treatments were complete.

All in all, i am actually very happy that i decided to go through with it even though it was a very difficult experience for me.

I was so hopeful and after 10 treatments of 20min sessions in the light was a waste of money and time. In fact, it may have my skin to break out even more.. They told me the sales line that it had to get worse before it would improve. It has been 3 months and would never recommend it.

I have seen many negative things about ALA-Blu so I thought I would put in my 2cents, or rather $900.00 (total price I have paid thus far), plus miscellaneous lotions and serums, overall I would estimate around 1200-1500.

I am 30 years old, I have been on Accutane 3 times over 5 year period, plus many types of other topicals and oral pills for the other 10years. Accutane works but the side effects are horrible, I am still dealing with them over 1 year later. Another problem with Accutane is it didn’t work permanently for me, only lasted about 8-14months over a 5 year period, and when it takes 6 months to get clear skin I had to consider alternatives

ALA-Blu worked very well for me, yes it is very expensive and fairly painful.
I completed 3 sessions, with 99% clear skin. Scars are reduced by 70%

Despite the price and the issues I have had with Accutane, I will always consider ALA-Blu over Accutane. Yes it is VERY expensive and yes it hurts pretty bad, but this is your face, and how much is your self esteem worth. I consider my self lucky to be able to afford these treatments, if I was not, I would consider a loan.

Side note, I went to a cosmetic surgery location 1st and didn’t like the Doctors, so I never went back. I ended up at a laser skin institute that I felt had much more experience. Prices were the same at both locations. 100 for Blue, and 200 for ALA. Most places have a consultation; I paid for one at the cosmetic surgery (60.00) location but not the laser skin center.

I went for two photodynamic treatments. The first time my face swelled and was painful for five days. The peeling was horrible...it was coming off in sheets. My skin became hyper oily and my acne became cystic and incredibly worse. The same thing happened the second time around. It made my skin and acne worse for months after. I saw no improvements in tone or texture of my skin either. Would not recommend it.

I had 3 Levulan treatments at $1500. There was some swelling after the first one and my skin was a little red for about a day, but no change in my acne. After the second one, my skin peeled more, but if anything my skin got worse. After the third one, my skin got a whole lot worse and my derm decided it was not going to work on me. Definately a let down.
