Was on Accutane for 4 months last year during the winter season - which is the WORST season to go on it (for all you who are thinking about trying it). Massive dry, itchy, flaky skin - unrelieved by even the thickest moisturizers. Very affordable - the generic Accutane was $5 for the first month and $10 for the last three months (insurance co-pays increased in the new year). Results were excellent - was completely pimple free for nearly 11 months (and I had the most pesky, unrelenting, cystic acne - particularly on my chin, which made all facial expressions painful as hell). Now that the seasons are changing and it's getting a bit warmer, I'm starting to get a little oily again and having small breakouts. A bit discouraging, but nothing I can't manage - it's 1/10 the amount I used to get, and the pimples are much smaller and a lot less painful than they used to be. Am now using the generic version of Proactiv (AcneFree, less than $20 for a month's supply from CVS), which is helping alot. It's a bit harsh to begin with, but using a good oil-free moisurizer after doing the twice daily regimen helps to sooth the skin. Note for women: make sure you're using good birth control while you're on Accutane - I bought an alarm wrist watch to guarantee that I would take my pill on time.

I suffer from adult onset nodularcystic acne (I am almost 30), and I have taken pretty much every drug on the market to alleviate my acne--Retin-A, Doxycylcine, Minocycline, Benzoyl Peroxide, and NOTHING worked. In fact, all of the previous treatments actually made my acne worse (the breakout from the Retin-A was beyond horrible).
Accutane is a MIRACLE. In just three short months of Accutane treatment, I have noticed that every single aspect of my face is PERFECT!! As of right now, I do not have one cystic lesion on any part of my body!! NOT ONE! Accutane has cleared everything up perfectly.
And side effects? Chapped lips, dry skin, and dry eyes seem very pervasive, but, in the end, and when I compare it to a blemish free face, it is well worth it.
I would encourage everyone who has stubborn, recalcitrant acne to give Accutane serious consideration; it could change your life. It certainly changed mine.
