I had really bad acne all through high school. My dermatologist put me on accutane the summer before my senior year. I got all the non serious side effects, dry lips, peeling of the face, no depression though. After a few weeks of being on it, it started working miracles. Most of my acne was gone. At the end of the 4 months it was totally gone. No one would have ever thought I had acne at one point. It lasted about a year before coming back. This time though, not nearly as bad as before I tried accutane. I went on a smaller dose of accutane and got rid of it again for about another year. I am now 23 and am considering taking it again because for the third time my acne has come back. It is not so bad, but is still anoying after living without it for so long. In my opinion accutane is a great drug, it really works and I didn't suffer from serious side effects. If you had bad acne before, it probably won't come back as strong as before. The odds are it will come back though, so you might have to take a few courses of it until you grow out of it.

I have pretty mild acne, just the occasional breakout on my chin, but it's persisted through 8 years of many treatments -- mostly variations on the antibiotic/ Retin-A theme. My derm finally decided to put me on Accutane (actually, the generic version) since I was still breaking out even with the combo of antibiotics/ Retin-A.
I could only stand it for a week. I thought I could deal with the side effects, which even in a week were clear: red, peeled-looking skin, dandruf from an extremely dry scalp, flaky facial skin, dry patches on the rest of my body. But then I started getting pounding headaches and blurred vision which my derm said were a possible sign of "brain swelling." So I had to be taken off.
It's a shame because the skin on my face (red and peeling though it was) also became completely zit-free within 2 days of starting. And now I'm back to square 1...I'm sooooo sick of Retin-A! eeep. So. Use this drug with caution. You don't want to end up blind or...with a swollen brain.

I have been suffering from this disease since I was 13 years old, I am 33 now. Over the years, this affliction has become worse and since giving birth 2 years ago, it has progressed to the worst that I have ever had! I have severe acne and although not cystic, the scarring that has been caused is sooo bad that I hate to look at myself in a mirror.
I started accutane therapy one year before my wedding in 1999. By the time my wedding came around my skin was so clear!!! And for once in my life I felt like a normal person instead of a freakin leper. I was so overjoyed that I wore only lipstick and took as many profile and close-up pictures that I could. I didn't even have to wash my face for almost six months after the therapy had ended, my skin stayed as clear as a porcelain doll.
ACCUTANE WORKED FOR ME AND WAS THE BEST THING THAT I EVER TRIED IN MY LIFE!
Yes, there are side effects but I would give almost anything to feel like a normal person.
This disease has caused me so much hardship in my life, low self esteem, lack of self-confidence, fear of pursuing professional opportunities, etc, etc. I haven't resumed the therapy because we are working on our family right now so I am emotionally suffering more than you can imagine. If you are thinking about trying this treatment, you owe it to yourself to purse this option, it could change your life!
