Pros Dries up the skin and makes it more managable. Clears up your face. Gives your face that overall clean feeling after you cleanse. NO initial breakout for me.
Cons Very very MINOR dryness. Slightly chapped lips.. Just used chapstick. Felt tired after taking the medication.. So take it at night after dinner. Minor headaches in the first week which I can also attribute to stress of moving into college.
Bottom line Accutane works. The side affects are minor if you're on 40mg or lesser dose.. Of course side affects are dependant upon the individual.. If you've tried everything over the counter, under the counter, and all around then I recommend giving Accutane a try. After three weeks all the acne on my face has dried up and is going away. My cystic acne has been improving daily and the large mass it was three weeks ago is nearly gone completely. It is indeed the miracle drug.. Even if I need to go on another round of it I will.. Side effects are negligible. Ipledge will be your biggest problem.. Good luck!!

Pros Got rid of the acne; my face was oil-free all day
Cons Dryness; Took a while to work
Mood swings - which sucks especially b/c I'm a guy
Less energy
Bottom line This stuff works, but you have to consider any possible consequences. For me, nothing else worked and I was sick of living with acne, so I decided to do it. Luckily for me the side effects weren't too bad and it got rid of all my acne, which felt great. I've been off it for about 3 months now. The acne has started to come back, but its not even close to how bad it was before.

Pros None
Cons Very unpleasant side effects, nearly killed me and hugely changed my life for the worst
Bottom line I was rushed to hospital 3 years after finishing with isotretonin and they found a freak rib bone spur that had punctured my heart. They put it down to the isotretonin. To this day I still suffer for that 3 month course 17 years ago. When I think back to my youth, I have clear memories up until the accutane course where all memories become kind of scrambled. I really would not recommend anybody take this drug, it's really not worth the unknown.

Pros clears skin for a short period of time, makes it not oily, changes skin type (makes other treatments more effective - like the creams
Cons short term effects are very bad:
-worsening acne/dryness
-this is wierd, but just about everything tasted like sand
Bottom line i am 22, i have been on acutane 3 times (starting a forth round today), i havent experienced any real disagreements with acutane (cept the dryness of everything you can imagine in the human body)

last 3 treatments cleared my face right up, but the acne returned after a period of time (first time, it was 3 months, second time, it was 6, third, it took much longer (8mo) before my nasty breakout, which happend a week ago)

my derm. told me about 1/10 patients need to redo accutane treatments, and 1/10 need to redo it again... (means im at 1/1000, going for 1/10000) - hope the odds are on my side this time~

also told me the pills are like $20 per, without insurance, so get that first~

its worth it to me (i just wish it could work better)~

Pros gets ride of acne
Cons damaged liver, not to mention all the listed side effects not worth it..
Bottom line DO NOT! use accutane yes there is no doubt it will clear up you acne but it will come back worse in a few years. It suppresses the oil glands and damages them so bad they can't do their job correctly... think about that how good can that really be for you. Not the mention the years taken off you life from liver damage and your liver is a key part in having a acne free life. I feel your pain of having acne and being ready to do ANYTHING to get rid of it no one likes it and it can be embarrassing. But they have no clue what is in store for the people that take it now you could have liver cancer or some other disease 20 years down the road they don't know, all they know is that they are making millions off people and doctors get a percentage. NOT WORTH IT AT ALL but who am i to tell you what to do.

Pros Cleared up my skin pretty good.
Cons My skin was SO dry when i took it. Its been a year since and now my skin is exctly the same way as it was b4 it. Its so hrmful for ur liver i will not take it again and you can only take for 6 mo. dont think about wearing makeup with the flakey skin
Bottom line Accutane is horrible while you are on it because EVERYTHING is dry- your face, (even your butthole- gross), your lips (i spent about 400 dollars on chapstick- i felt like a chapstick addict), your entire body, your eyes, etc. It's good for 6 months after it.. my skin was pretty clear, but then soon afterwards my skin went right back to normal.. so use this.. and keep up with your derm.. its not a long term thing just keep that in mind, but it does work!

Pros I'm in my second month and I noticed improvements within the first month. Good product if you are strong enough to take it
Cons I can deal with the dry lips/skin, but the back pain and joint pain can be intense, especially in the morning. I was extremely tired when I first started taking it I lost my appeitite.
Bottom line Really think hard about it and ask a lot of questions. I've suffered mostly from adult acne...I know it sucks! But, the side effects are no joke so really think about if clear skin is worth it for you. After all it's not Cancer!

Pros All oil on body and face goes away while you are taking the medicine.
Cons Feels like you are poisoning your body, horrible headaches, hair loss, skins worsens the first two months, acne returns within six months after treatment, tired all the time, mood swings
Bottom line I have been on acctane for two treatments. 6 months in 2005 and 6 months in 2006. Both times acne returned just as worse. It it not WORTH the horrible side effects. It's just a shame there is nothing esle that works. The FDA should take this product off the market.

Pros Clears up and stays for a while.
Cons It is expensive with out insurance.
Bottom line Reduces oil glands which clear up a lot but they can grow back. I have been fighting acne and I would rather have clear skin than anything else. I am thinking about getting on it again because nothing else works and it is the most depressing thing someone can go through in my opinion. Especially when you cant even look yourself in the mirror.
