I used Accutane in 1993 at age 30 after 20 years of cystic acne. Before that, I had tried everything - nothing helped. I was on Accutane for four months. Had dry lips, and some mild stomach pain at times, but that was it; my acne did NOT worsen during the course of treatment, only improved. I'm prone to depression but had NONE while I was on this medication, so I find it interesting re: the reports on a link between Accutane and depression (didn't they ever think that maybe it was the ACNE that was depressing those people?)I remember that the doctor made me sign a 12 page form saying that I wouldn't get pregnant while on the Accutane. The result of this treatment was amazing - in the twelve years since I had the Accutane, only two breakout incidents - that's it (and my Dr said those may have been related to Rosacea, another condition I developed more recently). Now I'm going through laser treatments for the scarring, my legacy from all of this. I only wish Accutane had been available when I was younger.

I've had acne since i was 12. I went on many things and at 14 was told about accutane. I was told I would be on it for 4 months and ended up being on it for 9 months. It worked after about 6 months and then 6 months after i was off it the acne came back just as bad as before. While I was on accutane I had a lot of depression and dry lips. I was very moody and would get terrible stomach aches up to a year after being on it. I was very upset to have gone through all of this and get acne right back. I was told that it would never return. I'm still looking for the right cure. I regret being on it.

I had great skin until I was about 16 years old. From then on, it started getting pretty bad. I kept getting more frequent breakouts which would compound, and by the time I was 17, I had really bad acne in the facial region. It is worth noting that I only had acne in my face. My back and shoulders were quite oily, but no acne ever developed there. My face was oily as hell, but I didn't really have cysts and nodules. Very few and far between, anyway. Still, my face was covered with red marks and pimples. I couldn't bear not to squeeze out all that could possibly be squeezed out.

Anyway, I got started on tetracyclin, and that did absolutely nothing for me. Next was abboticin which did nothing. Then, FINALLY, Accutane. The WONDERDRUG.

I had read up on it. I had read all about the side effects. I had read about the movement to ban Accutane because of it's alleged connection with several teenage suicides (w/regards to depression). Did I care? Not in the slightest. I just wanted to kill the acne, with any means and at any cost.

I was set on a 4 month CURE. The doctor had warned me that for the first month, my acne would probably get a lot worse, but that then I'd steadily improve, and at the 4 month mark, it should be entirely gone. Right he was. I got horrible the first month, but it didn't bother me, as I now had hope that I was on my way to getting rid of this crap. My lips got very dry, and I sometimes noticed dried up drops of blood in my nose, but I damn near enjoyed being dried out. It was a pleasant change. After four months, my skin had been transformed. I've never had any kind of acne trouble after that, and that's three years ago.

I didn't have any problems at all and my acne cleared up very well while using Accutane.
I took when I was 15 and unfortunately it came back a year later. And I have acne right now (just not as harsh as the first time)
My insurance didn't cover it so it was pretty expensive but if you think of it as the same price as plastic surgery than it's worth it.
I had really dry lips but that was about it. (Vaseline and exfoliating my lips worked the best)

this is very good stuff if it works for you and it does work for most people. the side effects dry skin and lips are bad if you dont treat them properly. if you are always applying alot of lip balm and moistoriser you can get them to be ok most of the time. for nose bleeds use vaseline or lips balm and always apply that too trust me it works just apply it alot

Well I used it as a kid so I'm not really sure how much my mom paid for it, so I just put 3 for affordability.

Anyway, before I started using accutane, I had acne everywhere. I had it on my shoulders, my neck, my chest, my back, and all over my face. I used various "lighter" medications from my doctor which helped, but didn't fully work. Also, I would have to put a topical creme all over the parts with acne (of which there were many). My doctor had told me about accutane, but my mom was hesitant due to all the side effects.

After further convincing, I started taking the drug. In a matter of months, my acne was completely gone and it hasn't returned to this day (2 years later).

As for the side effects, they didn't affect me too much. I had been taking less powerful acne medication previous to this, and accutane wasn't any worse when it came to dry skin. Just be sure to keep lip balm with you at all times. I had to regularly go and get my blood tested, which is no big deal. If one of the side effects is depression, I didn't get it (at least I didn't notice anything).

This drug was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I had suffered from severe acne since of the age of twelve. My doctor prescribed me every form of medication under the sun ranging from lotions to antibiotics but nothing worked in the long term. At 17, I was referred to a skin specialist who put me on roaccutane for four months. The end result was amazing - My skin looked fantastic and has pretty much stayed that way for the last seven years. Also, costs wise, I got the entire treatment for free, on the NHS, which was a real bonus considering how expensive it is. I get the occasional breakout, but nothing severe. The downside of the treatment were the side effects, which for me, were pretty bad; migraines, nausea, depression, weight loss and the worst one of all, cracked lips (which to this day, are permenantly dry).

Accutane is the greastest acne solution. Ive tried almost everything else and it all pales in comparison with Acctane. Insurance made it really cheap and the results have been incredible. Only down sides: always chapped lips, dry skin, cant give blood. Definetly worth it though.
