If taking the oral form I would suggest also using an aha lotion or topical retinoid + non comedogenic moisturizer concomittantly. Erythromycin is a macrolide which is active against staph A (common skin bacteria) but there are strains which are resistant. These resistant strains can invade fragile skin and cause skin infections which make acne look like nothing. Be careful. Antibiotics are powerful drugs. More than a 6 month course and you are putting yourself at serious risk and comprimising your immune system.

Hi all!

ive been using erythromycin topical lotion with the sponge applicator for two weeks. my acne was getting worse than EVER BEFORE! and was bringing my confidence down. NOW i notice that my spots are drying out and have faded from a BRIGHT RED COLOUR!! it smells nasty but is worth a try cos i know how stressful acne can be. def give this a try i just hope it works for me longterm!! ALL THE BEST!

I used Erythromycin solution for 4 years and it completely cleared my acne. I started to break out again in my late 20's. I went to a dermatologist and he said I am now resistant to the erythromycin. When it worked, it worked well. I now am on benzaclin, no results yet.

While I was on it, it worked for a little, a month after I was off of it I got worse than before. It messed up my stomach. Antibiotics are really bad for your system. I wouldn't recommend this drug.

Am 25 and have trouble spots on chin and cheeks--use an applicator liquid erythromyicin...it certainly helps but one must be very vigilant about using it. Not a bad solution for mild to medium acne--doctor insists on washing hands before and after applying, and there is some itchiness.

30yr old guy, kinda resigned to acne for life ! Mind you its mild and if I look after my self its not too bad. Some years are fine, others bad. Just had a breakout, lived with it for a few months, but didn't get better - went to doctors and got Differin, thought would work and kill the wrinkles! Didn't work, made my skin smooth, but sore (especially after washing) and grew my blackheads to monster size!. Went back to doctors, got Zineryt (Eryth and Zinc Acetate) works v well - all spots & blackheads gone in 2 weeks - immediate overnight improvement. However, Im aware of the resistance issue with anti bacs and now the acne has gone will control my skin with Differin again, as I think it works better as a "skin conditioner" than an acne treatment.
