| Pros | -Simple, effective acne treatment. -Cheap. 10 dollars with no insurance. -Does not effect Birth Control pills. (My dermatologist said this was not proven.) |
|---|---|
| Cons | -Must be taken with food, no dairy! -Women are prone to yeast infections.(eating yogurt daily should help minimize this.) -Do not take and then lie down. Stay upright for at least half an hour. Medicine could travel up your throat and burn. Feels a bit like acid reflux. -Chance of slight nausea. |
| Bottom line | I was told I have hormonal/pre-menstrual Acne. I am 26/f and decided to seek professional help after my Acne turned Nodular/Pustuler. Currently, I was prescribed 100mg of Doxycycline twice daily, along with a 5% Benzoyl Peroxide topical waterbased gel the dermatologist gave me. I haven't had any problems, though it is slightly frustrating that you must take with appropriate foods and be extremely consistant with the antibiotic. The goal is to treat the bacteria from the inside by constantly having the antibiotic in your system, and treating it on the outside w/a topical. I have had slight nausea, but nothing too bad. TAKE WITH FOOD, and do not lie down after you take it. Wait half and hour. I have been on this for a few weeks and already see a difference. Though I am still getting a few breakouts, they are not as big, and go away quickly. Be patient with this. Results will show early on, or definitly by 2 months. I reccommend giving it a try. |

| Pros | -cleared acne fast -it is a pretty color!!! |
|---|---|
| Cons | -the pills are really big -they have crazy side effects |
| Bottom line | So, I was given 18 sample pills from my dermatologist and took one every day for a while. One day, I was talking to my friend about how I just took "a horse pill". She said that whenever she takes a big pill, she is afraid she is going to choke. Now this made me scared, so I started to not take them. I figured that since we didn't have to pay for them yet, I just would start taking them once I had to pay for them. They turned out being very expensive, (I am not sure of the exact price) and now I just got my prescription. They are smaller than the samples but still very large, and I am horribly afraid to take them. But all in all, these pills worked great for me when I was taking them. I have heard that you get a stomachache if you eat before taking it, but others say you can't take them on an empty stomach. I have not had problems with the side effects of these pills at all, |

| Bottom line | Ive only taken this for 2-3 days now, ill probably write another review later. My kind of acne is not the nodular, pustule types but i tend to get loads of whiteheads over my nose and sides of nose area because I constantly sweat loads there. The whiteheads and sweat also constantly make my nose look really red. What ive found is that doxycycline has stopped my sweat production in this area which was one of the main reasons why i got so much acne there. It has calmed the whiteheads from coming and therefore my nose does not look red. One problem i do have now though is that it makes my face feel really dry and tight all over but jojoba oil helps this. Ive had this problem for years, doxycycline is the only thing that has stopped this. |

| Pros | My face was already pretty clear. A few zits here and there. But the point is, it kept my face clear and I haven't broken out since I used it. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Not much. I had a few bad headaches but I'm not sure if this is a side effect of this drug. |
| Bottom line | My derm prescribed the generic brand of this so it was covered by Medicaid (and thus free). I didn't have any bad effects that I knew of (aside from the headaches). And now, all I have left are a few light post-acne marks. |

| Pros | works well & fast |
|---|---|
| Cons | may not be right for everyone! very strong drug |
| Bottom line | Doxycycline may work wonders for some users. However, I am a 22 year old girl and started developing serious acne for the first time a couple of months ago. I have been taking doxycycline for two months, and have seen great results. However, I discovered after my skin cleared that my acne is hormonal. I am only getting breakouts before my period. I am asking my doctor to switch to Aldactone! P.S. DO NOT take this on an empty stomach! Eat a piece of bread etc. before taking |

| Pros | -Acne doesn't get worse |
|---|---|
| Cons | -Nasea -Have to plan when to take, etc. |
| Bottom line | I've been using it for about a week, twice a day with 100mg. I was VERY apprehensive about using an oral antibiotic because I don't want to mess up my immune system or have to rely on antibiotics. The nauseous feeling, I think, compares to the stomach ache you get after reading in the car to long. It's not enough to make me vomit, but I haven't had it without food yet (and I'm not going to). My derm recommended that I take it 1/2 hour after a meal whereas my pharmacy recommended 1 hr. I took it 45min after the first time and that was to long (I felt nauseous) so I take it 30 min after, and only feel sick if it was a smaller meal. Also I take 30 min after even if I have calcium, which the pharmacy and my doc said was ok. Hopefully I will see more results soon! |

| Pros | 1. Cheap 2. Kind of cleared up acne. |
|---|---|
| Cons | 1. I lost weight (I'm talking double digits here). 2. Sensitive skin. |
| Bottom line | I used it in conjunction with retin-a and the topical does wonders, however, the anti-biotic made me lose weight weekly and on top of all of the throwing up, I was previously diagnosed with gastritis. I would take caution while taking this medication. (I used omoxyciclin which is my favotite, and I just finished with Ampicilin.) |

| Pros | Cleared up face |
|---|---|
| Cons | Took a while to work Made me prone to sunburn Can't take it with anything containing calcium Lowered platelet counts |
| Bottom line | This product took a while to kick in, but once it did, it helped a lot. I used to have moderate acne, some cystic, but now I only will have one small pimple every now and then. It was frustrating to take because I had to take it morning and night (with food, because my stomach is sensitive) but you can't take it with anything that contains calcium (because it hinders absorption of the doxy). I had to stop taking it, though because it lowered my platelet counts, which is a somewhat common side effect. |

| Pros | Clears up Acne some, but not nearly as much as you expect. I was on it for a while, and it worked really well but quit working then was put on monocycline and that didn't work so i stopped taking any oral medications for a while. My doctor then put me back on doxycycline and there has only been a minor improvement. I do not have severe acne whatsoever, but I do want clearer skin and this did not work that well. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Slow to work Does not fully clear up the skin Bad stomach ache if not eaten with food |
| Bottom line | Try Acutane, if too expensive, there is a generic version that works wonders |
