I started taking doxycycline about a year ago and was on it for about 6 months. I want to say my acne finally was gone between the third and fourth month of taking it. I have been off of doxy now for six months and my acne has not come back. However, I have been using clindamycin, 4% benzoyl peroxide wash, and a retinol cream for maintenance. I am so glad that I took doxy. I contribute much off the success of getting rid of my acne to doxy, because i have tried just the retinol creams and Benzyol before and it didn't work. I would highly recommend this to people with severe acne.

Pros

  • really gets rid of acne

Cons

  • takes a long time, has to be taken with food and lots of water, can cause fungal infections
  • severe
  • for a few months

I've always had a little bit of acne, but it was never too bad. I would break out twice month, usually before and after my period and then i would have decent skin for a week or two. But my skin has always had a hyper pigmentation after a blemish. december 2011 my skin took a turn for the worse and by May my skin had cystic acne, lot of pigmentation was pretty bad. My derm put me on the generic (doxycycline) at first, but that made me sick so i switched and Doryx doesn't. It takes time, but by september my skin is pretty much all clear. It GREAT! I sitll get a blemish or two on my period or if i sleep in makeup, but its not NEARLY as bad and goes away much quicker, and i've learned not to pick at them! I also use Ziana, which i really like, and Aczone which really cleared up the redness and pigmentation (but Aczone takes time, but works wonders). My back was also pretty bad, like i was embarrassed to wear any shirt that exposed my back. My back is completely clear now. Doryx is amazing and it just takes time! Bottom line, started in may and im clear in september, with each week getting better.

By the way, I have insurance and the cost of the prescription is usually $60, but my derm gave really great coupon card from the manufacturer and it only costs 25 for a month supply. Just ask the doctor for one!

Pros

  • It REALLY works!
  • It is consistent and it cleared up my skin.

Cons

  • Huge, daily pill. And if you forget it for more than a day or two, I tend to break out.
  • Headaches is a side effect, and i have had some but its an ok price to pay for great skin.
  • moderately severe
  • for a few months
  • $ 25
  • I recommend using this treatment.

I've been on Doryx for about 3 weeks and I am still breaking out. Maybe I need to wait a bit longer but I was expecting better results. I always take it with a meal, so I wonder if this is inhibiting the effectiveness of the pill.

Pros

  • I have not had any side effects that others have complained off.

Cons

  • I'm still breaking out
  • moderate
  • for a few weeks
  • $ 25
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

I am a 32 yr old woman who has struggled on/off with acne my whole life. It got so horrible at one point, so I started seeing the derm. Before I got in with the derm (about 1.5 months), I cut out dairy and noticed significant improvement. The doc put me on epiduo (had previously been using retin A) and Doryx. She warned me my skin would get worse before it got better.

Well it is nearly 3 months later and I haven't seen any improvement. Fortunately my skin did not break out or get worse. And I "think" maybe "hope" that the cystic acne got a little better. But it seens like I have more whiteheads especially on my cheeks and around my mouth.

So I stopped the Doryx and my doc just put me on Solod. If this antibiotic doesn't work, then the next step will be accutane.

Pros

  • Minimal side effects
  • Has a co-pay card (only $25)
  • Worked (minimally) improving deep, cystic acne bumps, but did nothing for whiteheads

Cons

  • Hardly improved my acne at all
  • moderately severe
  • for about a month
  • $ 25
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

IT WORKS! I had acne once before moderately about 3 years ago, and then my skin was completely clear for about 2 years but just recently my acne had gotten so severe that it hurt for me to even open my mouth wide enough to floss or eat, not to mention it itched all day and night. This has worked complete wonders for me. Even though it does take about 4-8 weeks for it to kick in, it's so worth it. I suffered from an initial breakout for about a month after starting the medication, and it made me breakout not only more on face but on my back as well so it's easy to lose hope but you have to stick with it to get the full results you want. At about week 6 my skin had gradually started calming down and then at week 8, I completely stopped breaking out. I'm currently on month three and it's still working great! My confidence went from 0-10 over the past month, and I couldn't be happier. Patience, patience, patience. That's all it takes.

Pros

  • helped clear cystic acne completely.

Cons

  • sensitivity to sun, nausea if not taken with food.
  • severe
  • for a few months
  • I recommend using this treatment.

Doryx 150 is great. I haven't experienced any side effects from it. It is easy to take and gets rid of acne everywhere. Just make sure you drink it with a cup of water, and that you stay in a vertical position for at least 15 minutes. I once took this pill and went to sleep immediately after, and I had severe esophogitis and experienced pain while eating for a week.

Pros

  • Works great
  • Clears acne all over body

Cons

  • Esophogitis if used incorrectly
  • moderately severe
  • for a few months
  • I recommend using this treatment.

Do not waste your money. I had insurance, so I only wasted money on my co pay.

Pros

[not submitted]

Cons

  • Did not work. Made my skin VERY sensitive to sunlight. I could not even walk around the block without feeling like I had needles sticking my skin everywhere. This medication also may also effect the liver.
  • moderate
  • for about a year
  • $ 60
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

Don't take them!

Pros

  • cleared up acne

Cons

  • Significant depression, suicidal tendencies, disrupted menstrual cycle, weight gain and severely lethargic. My doctor said none of my side effects could be caused by the drug, but I NEVER had those problems prior or after I stopped taking the pills.
  • very light
  • for a few months
  • I do not recommend using this treatment.

I have been using it for a few months and it helps a bit, but I still have really bad acne. It isn't a cure or quick fix, but it does help.

Pros

  • got rid of most of the acne on my back, and most of the cyst zits that I would get on my face.

Cons

  • the pill is big, it doesn't do ANYTHING for blackheads though
  • moderately severe
  • for a few months
  • I recommend using this treatment.
