SPF update plus what to do in the meantime

Update: A few of you have been asking for an SPF update. I’m working on getting it feeling just right with ingredients that are uncompromisingly high quality yet within financial reach. The bottom line is that it will come out when all of this comes together but I can’t guarantee when that will be. It may take some time since SPF is quite a tricky brew. I know it’s been a very long time, and it may still be longer. I can promise you one thing–that I am working on it and will let you know the minute it’s done.

In the meantime: A couple of options:

1. Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer with a 5-6 drops of jojoba oil added.

2. If that doesn’t work well enough to take care of flakiness, you can mix equal parts Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer with Acne.org Moisturizer, and then add 5-6 drops of jojoba oil.

3. Another option is Philosophy Hope In A Jar SPF30. I love this stuff but it is zinc based like so it is a flake promoter, much like the Olay. Since I use benzoyl peroxide and need something to combat flakes, I often mix equal parts Philosophy Hope In A Jar SPF30 with Acne.org Moisturizer plus 5-6 drops of jojoba oil. This gives me an SPF of around 15 and keeps me pretty good on flakes. The only downside is that the Philosophy SPF is very expensive (around $35 for 2 ounces). But since I mix it with Acne.org Moisturizer it goes twice as far.

Spot treatment: Someone asked about the spot treatment as well. This project is on the back burner at this point. In the meantime, the AHA+ works so well for spot treating that it is definitely a suitable alternative.

For the past year, I’ve been using DeVita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+. This product has a safe rating on cosmetics database. I thought I had reviewed it here, but must not have – will do so now. It is zinc based, but it disappears completely, & I’ve never had a flaking issue with it. My skin looks & feels calmer & more nourished with this daily sunscreen in the morning & Dan’s moisturizer at night. It might worth checking out.

Well, I can’t figure out how to add a review! A couple of people apparently reviewed DeVita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+ a few years ago, but it is listed under the “spot treatment” category & doesn’t come up in a review search for moisturizer/sunscreen, which is unfortunate, as it it’s a safe one that doesn’t break me out & works well w/The Regimen.

I have been using Kiehl’s Facial Fuel with SPF 15 for a few months now and love it, very moisturizing and has not made me break out.

Thanks Dan for answering about the SPF status. Have you or anyone else had experience with the new Mexoryl SX SPF ingredient? It’s touted as the “best” SPF sunscreen ingredient currently on the market. I wonder if it’s acne friendly with users here.

I’ve been using the Josie Maran SPF 40+ sunscreen for a few months now and happy with it for the most part. It doesn’t contain any chemical sunscreens and only physical ones (a requirement for me). Even though it’s a fairly high percentage of ZO and TD, it blends in well and doesn’t promote flaking (I think b/c it has quite a bit of jojoba oil and some argon oil in it). The only downside for me is that it contains fragrance. It’s supposedly “natural” but fragrance is fragrance and it burns my eyes if I use it around them.

It has not caused any break outs though so I just use a different sunscreen around my eyes.

Thanks for the rec, Voce. I’m going to check that out once my Josie Maran stuff runs out. (I wrote the comment above.)

Ive grown out of my acne while waiting for this to come out lol ;)

I’ve been using Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer and it is really good on the skin. It satisfies what I needed on my skin. But I haven’t tried Olay Moisturizer with jojaba oil with. I’ll try it soon.

I have been using Olay Total Effects from a long time. I wonder how far has it effectively protected my skin from sunburn, but yes it has prevented formation of black spots on my face.
