I haven't heard of laundry detergent per se causing acne. The detergent with fabric softener built in may be a problem, but regular detergent--haven't heard anything bad so far. Let's keep our ears and eyes peeled.

Hey Dan! I've always heard the "hot water" thing from my mom - we were raised in North Dakota - really cold weather area/dry skin - and hot water is known to dry skin out... I found a link on a dermatology site (not sure how valid it is...) http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/dry_skin.html or http://www.skincarephysicians.com/eczemanet/bathing.html

I just thought because with water and temperature - the hotter the more it's going to "suck" or cause the moisture/natural oils from your skin -to evaporate and cause it to dry out. Like a hot blowdryer would do your skin (heat pulls moisture from the skin by drying, right?) Dry skin = irritation (or clogged pores from flakiness) = acne? I always wash with lukewarm. Not hot. Plus hot water hurts :)

Dan - I've got another question too - I know you've done a lot of your Daily Video blogs on laundry and softener products (and that they've given you acne on your body in the past) - have you heard of any good research on laundry detergent causing acne? (all over, face too?) I was just curious about this - I try to stay with the "sensitive skin" or "Free and clear" detergents - because anything with a strong scent makes me weary of putting it on my face (like towels or bedding) for acne?? Do you know of any good research at all?

hahaha that was funny. (: by the way dan i made a mini-site on a website where basically...a lot of teen girls and some boys go. it was just really quick telling them about acne.org, in case they don't know. a lot of them make actual sites asking about acne so i figured it'd make sense!

Re: hot water drying the skin, that is quoted all the time, especially in tips for winter. Take a look here: *link removed* I think your old site is charming. :-)

Hey Kat,

I used to say to wash with warm, rinse with cold. But I've come to realize over the years that it really doesn't matter.

As far as hot water drying someone out, I hadn't heard that before. Where did you hear that?

Ah ha! I found it! Here's the link to your Daily Video Blog about warm water vs. cold water (for those that are curious:) http://www.acne.org/blog/2009/01/23/washing-with-cold-vs-hot-water/

I do have a question though - wouldn't you frown upon using hot water on your face? Not for acne purposes - but I'd think that using hot water on your skin all the time would dry your face out :) I know it does mine!!!! But I thought I'd put this on here in case others notice what I did on your old acne.org page :) I think the drawings are hilarious!!!

Dan - this is hilarious (in a good way!) You've come so far! Awesome job! I have one thing to note: in the regimen instructions on the old site - you told people to wash in the day with "very cold water" and then at night with "warm water" - any ideas behind that?? I know that you've covered in your Daily Video blogs about whether it matters if you use warm/cold water - you said that it doesn't matter - did some belief change with this? Since your old regimen you mentioned a difference??? Just curious! I saw that old regimen instruction sheet - and just thought I'd ask!
