Shaving and acne
Shaving is a pretty big deal when it comes to acne. Irritation can aggravate acne, and the wrong shaver or shaving cream can cause irritation. You can check out more about how I shave on the shaving pages.

Dan. I love your video blogs. When I found this site one of the first things I started doing (even before the regimen) was using a two-blade razor as you recommended. I previously used a Gillette Mach 3. Once I switched to Sensor Excel I noticed a dramatic difference. The two blade has far less irritation and still gives you a smooth shave.

Dan I use the Braun 360 Complete electric razor and I have to say that I experience barely any irritation and it shaves great (including the neck).

God, I hate razors! Waxing is the best, and the results last way longer!

Awesome info Dan. I have been debating whether or not if I should switch over to blade shaving from electric, like you, none of mine have ever gotten my neck smooth so I just always leave a stubble all over now. Thanks Dan.

I’ve got so much to thank you for it will go better in success stories / email, plus I might volunteer myself (programmer), I’ll be relevant here though: Thank you so much for recommending this razor! I did three blades -> five blades, horrible horrible horrible. Stopped shaving bought a beard trimmer. The Norelco T980, was/is best rated on Amazon and actually one of the cheapest. Works fairly well. I did the same as Dave and switched to the Sensor Excel upon discovering this site less than two weeks ago. It’s gentler and better, and it feels so good to be smooth again, so so good. Thank you thank you thank you!

Great video Dan. Should help a lot. I just have a quick question. A lot of the success on the regimen has to do with limiting irratation, but at night my face rubs on my pillow all night. I am just wondering if that causes irratation that could cause acne, and if it does, how do you stop that?

I use the latest Panasonic electric linear shaver and it is by far the best in terms of getting less nicks, cuts, and irritation, as compared to manual blades whether 2,3,4, always irritated and cut me. So, I would not completely eliminate electric shavers for those that have acne.
Shaving is like treating acne, there never was and never will be the best single solution or method. Try them all till you find a better solution.

I totally agree with the beard trimmer. I actually use an electric detailer (for beards, sideburns, buzzed hair) to shave my facial hair. Yes it does leave a little bit of stubble but it is not even noticeable if I shave everyday. The thing is it causes no iritation whatsoever. Even if I use just a two blade razor it still minimally strips my skin which iritates it. But with my trimmer/detailer it does not require any shaving cream and does not irritate at all, just targets the hair and I can also go against the grain without a problem! I highly recommend it because if you really think about it.. shaving with a razor is scraping a sharp blade against your acne which strips off the outer healing layer of skin and at times opens a wound.

I agree, good catch! Wouldn’t do very well to have to run off to the ER in the middle of a blog post! And omg, Dan, that’s so great that you are willing to try out a whole new razor just to see how it will work for the people asking for it! YOU’RE AWESOME!
My sister found that shaving her legs with the jojoba oil really made for super soft legs afterwards.

Just for the record, my experience is that an electric razor is the least irritating and creates the fewest breakout problems, so I guess everyone is different. Regular razors = acne for me.

I’m so happy your switching Dan, its always hard to scrape the bottom of the tube to get all of the gel out. By the way, your hair looks good short, you should keep it that way =).

I have to agree with what a lot of others are saying, some electric razors are actually quite good and irritate less than blades for me. To me sharp blades and yet another product on your face (shaving cream) would seem much more irritating. I think part of some peoples problems with electrics are that they expect a perfect shave from the start after switching from blades. Thats like expecting acne to go away the first night on the regimen.

I used double blade razors and they were the best razor shave.

However I, for the last year have used Cool Skin Phlilishave, its a wet electric shave but zero irritation.
I have recommended this to friends (non-acne) and they as well rave about it.
Try it I think you will be surprised.
Instead of Benzoyl Peroxide I replaced that with hardcore lactic acid moisturises.
Sick of bleaching T-Shirts.
Works well always 99% clear, never 100% gotta admit, but better than the dreadful mess I was in.
Keep up the awesome work.

Hey Dan. I’ve always had a problem with razor bumps/pimples on my neck after shaving so I thought I’d give an electric shaver a try. It was the worst mistake Ive ever made (well not the worst :P) resulting in terrible acne ALL OVER my face. Its been about a month and most of the acne has gone except for one side of my neck. Because shaving with a razor obviously plows over those irritations and inhibits their healing, I’m now using Magic Shave, a depilatory power you mix with water. My skin is less irritated now but the neck acne has yet to heal. Ive been using clearasil pads for a couple weeks and I think that might be causing more irritation than helping. Next I’m going to try a little antibiotic cream which has helped in the past. Jeez I sure wish I came across your blog a month ago…would have saved me a lot of grief and $$!
