Pros Clears up cystic acne
Cons Creates some mild redness
Dries skin
Bottom line I'm in my early 40s and have battled cystic acne all my life. Since having kids 10 years ago, I've ignored all prescription treatments for my acne (basically gave up). Last week, my dr. gave me this "new" gel (I'd never tried it) and I've been using it as prescribed for 5 days now (twice a day, after cleansing). The cysts I had that were healing are much better - scarring is much less than it would have been. The cysts I had that were starting to appear never emerged. I have had one new cyst appear but it's definitely greatly reduced than what it would have been. I have had some flakiness/dryness around my skin and after a couple of days, I noticed my skin looks redder than normal (it's always somewhat red). A small price to pay to avoid getting the cysts to begin with! I'll be sticking with this lotion, although I may start to use a bit less each time.

I only rated it a 4 because of the dryness and redness, but I'm hopeful that will go away after using the product for a while.

Pros Prevents Acne
Good spot treatment
Cons Can be a little drying but use lotion after it dries
Bottom line I have had acne since my freshman year in high school (i am now in my second year of college) and it has been mostly moderate. i have tried all the over the counter products and finally gave up on them a few months ago and decided to see a dermatologist for the first time. I was prescribed Benzaclin and it has been the best acne product I've ever used. i thought that lotions and creams would never work but this stuff really has worked for me, and i had really stubborn deep pimples. i started seeing results after about two to three weeks, i still got a couple pimples but i wasn't breaking out like i used too. Now i have been using it for two months and my skin is almost completely clear, i just have a few acne scars but i have no active pimples! I have read sooooooo many reviews of products on this site and read so many success stories, and i promised myself if i ever found a product that works i would write a review on it. if you are like me and feel that acne makes you self conscious and all those horrible emotions that come with acne i hope you go to a dermatologist and give this stuff a try cause it really does work.

Pros Eliminated almost all blemishes after about 2 months.
Cons Only kept my skin clear for about a month and a half, and now, several months later, it is worse than it has ever been.
Bottom line It did wonders for a couple of months, when I first started using it, but after that "honeymoon stage" it all went downhill. I have continued to use it, in the hopes that maybe it will help again, but to no avail! Of course everyone's skin is different, but it certainly hasn't been worth the money to me for the past several months.

Pros -Begins to start clearing acne immediately
-After 2 months dramatic improvement
-Helps with scarring
-Clears blackheads
-Overall appearance and texture majorly improved
Cons -Dry Skin
-May bleach clothing or pillows
-Discontinue use, acne comes back
Bottom line I had suffered with acne breakouts most of my life and after trying several products the dermatologist prescribed, I finally found this wonder topical! I have been using it now for over a year and it is the only thing that has helped. It helps improve every type of acne and it works rather quickly, many even disappear over night!

Other then the dryness there are no other downsides to this topical, and the dryness is really only a issue in the winter months. So just make sure you moisturize and you'll be fine!

Benzaclin can be expensive, the generic product is just as good and 10 times cheaper, so keep that in mind.

If you discontinue use, expect it to come back. There have been a few times where I stopped hoping I was "cured" and within a month my face looked horrible. So stick with it.. Don't stop just to start the whole process again.

If you have the opportunity to try this product I definitely would! It literally gave me my life back and I even get a little anxiety when the jar gets low! haha

Good Luck!

Pros Definitely helped decrease my overall number of active acne spots
Cons Brought a lot of my spots to a "head", dried out my skin (expected this with the BP), and didn't completely clear my acne is just reduced the amount of it.
Bottom line Works pretty good, but wasn't my miracle product. I alternating using it every other night, with retin A and lotioning my skin to death to keep it from flaking up on me.

Pros -Within weeks your acne will go down dramatically
-Not time consuming to use
-One bottle lasts you 7-8 months if you use it rationally (very small dabs on select areas).
-$25 with insurance for me
-My skin adapted to the initial extreme dryness and now I don't even need lotion (been using it for four years now)
Cons -Takes a couple weeks to really start working
-EXTREME dryness and stinging during the first weeks-months of usage, ESPECIALLY during winter months. Apply lotion as necessary.
-After prolonged use (1+ year), it will start to lose its effectiveness. Where at one point you may have been 100% acne free using the product, it will plateau you into 75% acne free. If you stop using it altogether you WILL get all of your acne back, so keep using it.
Bottom line I've used this for four years now, from the beginning of high school to now the beginning of college. It has truly helped my self esteem so much that I don't really need to care about what little acne I have left.

When I started using the product my forehead was like a minefield. Since the first few months I've been using it, my forehead has been smooth as silk. However, as I aged my cheeks and now my upper neck started becoming prone to acne. This product does keep the acne in those spots to a minimum but it has a hard time clearing it away completely. Nevertheless I still use it religiously.

It must be noted that it is very possible for your skin to overcome the dryness after prolonged usage (years) so much that you won't even need lotion when you are using the product, even during winter months.

Pros Clears acne fast
Gets rid of everything, blackhead, whiteheads.
Skin look amazing
Cons Dry skin
Bottom line I used to average 40 blemishes per week, on average, most likely on the low side, now I maybe have three. After one week I had cut my usual 40 in half, and by week two I started to ask myself "What blemishes" my pimples were large sore swelling under the skin, and a ton of small little whiteheads on my forehead. My nose was covered in black heads, and that number to has decreased drastically. This is amazing, I found a $10 coupon online after my first prescription was purchased, but it would still be expensive, either way I definitely would recommend it! I have T-zone oil so my cheeks get really dried out from Benzaclin, but I use Olay Beauty Fluid, or the Equate stuff if I don't have $25.00, and it really keeps the dead skin soft and easy to remove! Best acne medication I have ever used!

Pros Clears skin
Cons Extremely drying
Expensive (brand name)
Bottom line This is the last benzoyl peroxide-containing product I tried. It was extremely drying to my sensitive skin, though it was effective on the difficult cysts. I continue to use a clindamycin topical which is less drying.

Pros i like the consistency, somewhat gel-like
Cons over drying
causes severe redness
stinging
Bottom line Personally, I didn't like this stuff. My Dr prescribed me it and retin-a. This stuff stung like crazy for me! I think the 5% bp is too much for my skin maybe? And it was not because of the retin-a, because i did a bit of a test and used only benzaclin for the 1st month and i couldn't handle the stinging(maybe im a wuss), but it never subsided until i wiped it off. Very irritating! So anyways, i've heard great things about this stuff, but for me personally didn't work. (hence the no recommendation)

everyones skin is different!

retin-a did wonders tho if interested :)

Pros Clears acne (pretty much what we're looking for)
Fantabulous spot treatment
Cons Dries skin
Bleaches clothing
Bottom line Benzaclin is basically benzoyl peroxide with a topical antibiotic (clindamycin). It works pretty great, especially as spot treatment, and *especially* if you use it with another product. I was prescribed this along with tretinoin and it's worked wonders. Benzaclin in the AM and tretinoin in the PM. I do believe that benzaclin was the reason I didn't really experience an initial breakout with tretinoin.

The only downside really with benzaclin is that it tends to bleach clothing and pillowcases. I've actually lost a couple of shirts to this product, but it's a small price to pay for clear skin, as many, many acne-sufferers will agree.

I don't really know at this point if benzaclin loses its effectiveness over time (although common sense suggests it might, due to the fact it contains an antibiotic). At this point, I am reluctant to change my regimen.
