Skin type tested: My skin is oily and hardy with a moderate sprinkling of blackheads, whiteheads, and zits.

Method used: Since my skin is quite tough, I attempted a baking soda paste mask without heeding intimations that it's very drying. I've no notion of how much baking soda or water I used. Enough water to make it cling to my skin. Not enough water to make it slough off. Enough baking soda to color the mask a somewhat translucent white.

Agreeability: The first thing I noticed was an instantaneous burning. Traditionalist that I am, I usually like to feel a slight burn because I idiocyncratically associate that with efficacy. But this wasn't just a mild "I feel it working!" burn. This was a "Help! My skin is melting off my skull!" burn. I bravely/stupidly left the burning concoction on my flesh for 10-15 minutes. Upon removal, I discovered my skin was viciously red, itchy, and dry. The discoloration is pretty severe. Even if you are tough skinned, I'd recommend that you proceed cautiously. Perhaps use it for a shorter period of time. Maybe use less baking soda. I don't know. But if it starts to burn beyond the mild tingle some products evoke, you should probably take it off before you turn into a tomato like me. If you have sensitive skin, it's probably best if you look for a different method.

Efficacy: Zits that were at the end of their life cycle are smaller. Zits and whiteheads that were developing have been brought out. It seems as though the course the blemishes run was quickened by the baking soda. Whether or not baking soda effectively prevents skin flaws is yet to be determined for me, but it does seem to speed up the development and death of zits. In the time it took me to write this, the redness has gone down. In light of that, I would say the results are probably worth the drying and discomfort.

Result: Zit lifespan is shortened. Whiteheads are brought to the surface. No change in blackheads.

Worked great ONCE, then quick became too drying. I would suggest just using once a week, maybe on a day when skin is irritated from weather and such.

This really works! I was a bit skeptical, as I've struggled with acne for six years and thought that I'd surely heard of everything by now, but I guess not! I love how a few tablespoons out of the everpresent box in your fridge is a better facial mask than a super-expensive special paste. I use the 3-step program, plus this a few times a week, and my skin looks a ton better than it has since I was 12 - in fact, it's better than it was while I was on Accutane for awhile. I love it. :-D

The only annoyance is how it crumbles and brushes off so easily... oh, and how bad it tastes if you happen to get any of it in your mouth. But really, these are miniscule cons to astronomical pros!

First I tried it as a spot treatment and then later as a mask. The mask helped for 1 or 2 days...but then I'd have to do it again, and that was a pain. Plus the results werent consistent..all the spot treatment did was bring my pimples to a textbook whitehead (white/yellow tip with a red base). The pimples still took 3 weeks to go away completely.

Baking Soda definitely is worth a try. So far I haven't seen any miracles but then again, I have only been using the baking soda masks for a few weeks.

I'm in my early thirties, had acne since I was around 12 and I've tried all the nonprescription topicals, with little success.

When I stopped using SHAMPOOs to wash my hair (I heard the Sodium Lauryl Sulfates in them cause acne) and I started washing my hair alternting between bar soap and an SLS free shampoom,Dr. Woods Castille Soap, I noticed a very great improvement in my forehead, back and upper arm acne, which really cleared up nicely. So...Then I decided to give up on using all topical acne treatments (they weren't working anyway), and I also stopped washing my face with soap, and stopped using make up...

Instead I now wash my face with just plain water. I also apply the baking soda mask once a day for 30 minutes. I've been using this water only plus Baking Soda Mask for over 2 weeks now. AMAZINGLY, my face hasn't gotten any worse for it. I did get some bumps and all the red marks from earlier breakouts haven't faded yet (typical for me, I am a slow healer) But the black heads are definitely disappearing. I will check back in two more weeks to update you on my progress.

I tried baking soda with Cetaphyl one night after reading about it in Glamour. I wasn't expecting anything to help with my breakouts...I'm 30 and just started suffering from ance. I have spent a TON of money on all types of products and treatments with no great results. I also have hyperpigmentation from sun and scarring. I noticed a major difference after a week of use - it dried out my current pimples and I haven't had any new pimples. I have told all my friends about it! Even if you aren't suffering from cronic breakouts - it leaves your skin soft and brilliant. I'm totally sold on this easy and cheap remedy!! I'm waiting to see if it whitens my scarring - I have seen some bulletins of that happening.

Ok I have been wanting to try this for weeks.
I finally did today after reading every comment on here about it. I simply made it into a pretty thick paste and gently put it on my face and neck. I left it on for about an hour I experienced mild stinging at first but that went away fast.
After I washed it off my face felt so soft and when I looked in the mirror OMG I could tell such a huge difference already.

I hardly had any redness at all My face can take almost anything with all the harsh over the counter products I have been using all these years. I plan to add to this in a few weeks and hope it works. Even if it's not all I hope for but makes my face feel this good I'm hooked for life.
