Really fantastic find, and seems to work for so many people!
I have only very mild acne, and rare breakouts, but treating them with Baking Soda (or rather, using its UK name, 'Bicarbonate of Soda') makes them vanish incredibly quickly.
The greatest thing is that it works fantastically for pores too - I had many large, clogged pores on my nose, and applying Bicarbonate of Soda a few times on the first day (every 2 hours or so) and since then regularly every day has kept my nose flawless, and the pores are tiny!
Beware though, it literally 'leaches' out underlying acne bacteria to the surface, where they can be removed, so for example when I did my nose on the first day, the pores were replaced by little spots all over my nose (ughh!), but these disappeared over the next couple of days, and the regular treatment kept my nose clean.
I apply the powder similarly to the other posters:
o Prepare thick paste by adding water *slowly* to baking soda powder; I use about 2 tbsp powder, and the amount of water varies.. the paste should be thick enough that a small globule of it will stick to your finger when held upside down.
o Rinse face in tepid shower water (not too hot, it breaks capillaries! Just WARM water)
o Smear paste all over face; this is tricky on the first go, but you get used to it. Smear it gently, and make a layer sufficiently thick that your face looks white. It doesn't matter if the layer isn't smooth, it just needs to cover your skin.
o Leave on for 5 - 25 mins -> the timing depends on the pH of your skin; I'm a vegan, so my skin is alkaline, hence I feel little burning from the paste and leave it on a while. Don't leave it on for long if you experience a strong burning sensation, since your face will literally be (chemically) burned, and such burns can take a few days to fade.
o Rinse off with tepid shower water, and *pat* face dry; non-comedogenic moisturiser, preferably containing salicylic acid, can be put on skin if dryness ensues.
o Do this morning and/or night when you shower, and your skin will be fresh as a daisy! :)
A Word of Warning ------------------
Personally I wouldn't use baking soda as an exfoliator, merely as a paste; because the granules are crystals and so fine, it may damage your skin if you scrub them into your face/body.
