| Pros | Inexpensive, cleared skin within a few days |
|---|---|
| Cons | Face peeled, but not extremely noticeable |
| Bottom line | I love this stuff! My face has never been so clear, and I'm only on day 11! Nothing has every worked my skin. I've suffered from acne since I was in the 4th grade, I can officially go without makeup and feel great! |

| Pros | I have been taking antibiotics for over 10 years off and on for cystic acne. All eventually lose effectiveness. Bactrim DS works well and I usually only take it every other day when my acne is under control. |

| Pros | cheap w/ insurance |
|---|---|
| Cons | side effects didn't actually work |
| Bottom line | About 12 after taking my first Bactrim, I started to feel side effects. A lot of stuff listed in the booklet as "serious, contact your doctor": neck aches; lethargy; inexplicable bad mood; muscle pains. I contacted my doctor and she told me not to worry, so I stuck with the meds. After a few days of exhaustion and aching (which I quietly refuse to believe was just coincidental), the side effects died down, and I felt more or less fine. So the real problem is that Bactrim didn't do diddly for my acne. I have chronic cystic pimples on my chin, not numerous but huge and painful, and on Bactrim I never had less than one of these active at a time. What I'm really looking for out of an acne med is peace of mind--I want to cut the terrified mirror-checks out of my life. Bactrim didn't do that. |

| Pros | Worked incredibly well when taken consistently. Virtually no acne for over 1 full year. Free from some pharmacies! |
|---|---|
| Cons | Loses effectiveness over time |
| Bottom line | If you are willing to get a dermatologist's prescription and are not allergic, Septra works AMAZINGLY well. My only disappointment with it is that, like other oral antibiotics, it eventually became ineffective. Septra offered 1 great year of relief from whiteheads, blackheads, and mild cystic acne. A pharmacy at a local grocery store chain (Schnucks) also offers FREE oral antibiotics, so I never paid a dime for my Septra. Extra bonus! There may be similar offers at other pharmacies... shop around before you drop off your script! |

| Pros | best acne med ive ever taken. very effective with no side effects. works fast. worth the time and effort. |
|---|---|
| Cons | pill is bigger than usual. i broke out once i got off it but not severly. |
| Bottom line | take this if you have bad acne and have tried a whole lotta meds. side note: the depression people get when taking acne meds in my opinion is because you have acne and cant get rid of it or are scared to get it again or something to that effect. ive taken a buttload of pills and never became extra depressed. my depression always stemmed from the fact that i had acne. |

| Pros | Clears persistent acne very well; Relatively inexpensive. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Many people are allergic; Don't serve as a permanent solution. |
| Bottom line | My derm put me on a combination of Bactrim and a topical retinoid as a last step before Accutane. I've been dealing with nodulocystic acne for about a year now, and I've tried MANY different topicals and antibiotics. None have worked all too well (Duac was the most helpful topical, and no improvement with any antibiotics). Anyway, I went on Bactrim and my very broken-out face immediately cleared within a matter of one week. Unfortunately, on day 12 I had an allergic reaction to it (and discovered that I have an allergy to Sulfa-drugs). I broke out in a minor rash on my arms, legs, back and chest, and my face turned bright red. This reaction occurred over two days, then subsided. While it did give me a rash, it's been the most effective treatment so far. I'm kinda glad that I get to go on Accutane now because antibiotics are never a permanent solution. |

| Pros | Clear skin |
|---|---|
| Cons | dizziness, headaches, possible immunity from long term use |
| Bottom line | I use this regularly and it clears up my acne within a few days. I have sometimes been prescribed to take 1 pill twice a day, and sometimes told 1 pill once a day at the same dosage. I usually only take 1 pill/day as this is a sulfonamide and it dehydrates you. 1 pill seems to do the job for me. I have had dizziness and headaches on occasion, but when I drink more water it stops. Drinking water is always good for clearing skin, but it is ESSENTIAL to drink A LOT of water with this medicine or you WILL get dizzy and have headaches. Due to concerns about long term effects on the liver and the possibility of building up an immunity to this, I only take it when necessary. Usually for about a week around that time of the month. It's a pretty useful antibiotic in fighting respiratory infections and many other things so it would be a shame to develop an immunity from constant use. I highly recommend this, but be careful. Sulfa allergies are quite common. And make sure you drink a lot of water!!! |
