| Pros | With insurance, this antibiotic is cheap. |
|---|---|
| Cons | It's been over a month and it hasn't changed my breakouts in any way. It's also a huge pill -- slightly bigger than those women's one-a-day multivitamins. And it's uncoated, so it doesn't go down very smooth. |
| Bottom line | Different anti-b's work for different people, and I don't think this one is working for me. The doc has me on it for two months, so there's still some time left -- but you're going to be fairly disappointed if you're looking for quick results with this one. I had better results on doxycycline back in college -- but the side effects were nasty (nausea + yeast infections!). At least with this one, I can't say I've had any nausea or yeast infections! Just MAKE SURE to actually drink a full glass of water after taking it. |

| Pros | Cleared up Acne in no time. I have tried EVERYTHING (minocin, birth control pill, Doxycycline, tetracycline, you name it I have tried it.... including Accutane. My Obgyn prescribed this for me and it has been a GODSEND! |
|---|---|
| Cons | Pill is a little big but the pros outweigh the cons |
| Bottom line | I live in the south and this is one of the drugs that is free from ourr grocery store. So I don't pay ANYTHING to take it! Gotta love that. If you have tried EVERYTHING else and nothing seems to work....give this drug a shot. |

| Pros | Gets rid of most of my cystic acne |
|---|---|
| Cons | Doesn't always work, but best thing other than accutane which i don't want to take. |
| Bottom line | Works well, especially when used with a topical routine, but for me did not always get rid of all my cystic acne, nor did it always prevent new acne from flaring up. I used it about a year ago with good results, cycling on and off. Did not use it at all last year - tried to manage w/ just topical. Florida heat/humidity plus stress of exams put me over the top and went back on it a month ago. Works well, but not necessarily good to use antibiotics long term. May try accutane, but do not want to risk its side effects if I can help it. |

| Pros | Clears up chest and back acne wonderfully as well as face, cheap (I get the generic for Bactrim), doesn't make me sick/no real side effects |
|---|---|
| Cons | Big pill is kind of annoying, be careful (wear sunscreen!) if you're outside for long periods of time |
| Bottom line | When I first started taking antibiotics for my acne I was put on doxycycline - and discovered I'm very, very allergic! Then I switched to another brand, which I cannot remember the name...it worked well. Sadly, one of the listed common side effects was nausea and boy it wasn't kidding - I felt sick almost every morning and threw up at least once a week. Not worth it! So, finally, I went to Bactrim. Amazing stuff. It does take at least a couple weeks for you to really notice but on the other hand, I never get sick! In fact other than the clearing of acne, I've noticed absolutely no side effects in taking it. I wish the pill was smaller, but I literally just take it with whatever I'm eating for breakfast...a bite of toast or whatnot, and it works fine. This stuff really helped my chest and back breakouts. Face got better with the help of prescription cleansers, but for my back/chest, within a couple weeks of taking Bactrim I noticed a HUGE improvement, and even though I've |

| Pros | My skin was darn close to completely clear within two days |
|---|---|
| Cons | I had a horrible allergic reaction to this medication in the beginning everything was perfect, but about after a week and a half i had a sore throat, extreme itching all over my body you name it i itched from head to toe, swollen rashes on my faceetc |
| Bottom line | This medication was great in the beginning until i had an horrific allergic reaction about a week and a half of useing it. Which is strange because i have never had an allergic reaction to anything. So i would be very careful about that. |

| Pros | Whenever I get a pimple or two it goes away after I take this. |
|---|---|
| Cons | HUGE PILL, what I'd advise you to do is to have some water in your mouth, put the pill in, and swallow it with more water. I hated the taste whenever it smeared on my throat. |: It doesn't help with my red marks but it works great with my pimples. |
| Bottom line | Doesn't really show effects on red marks for me, but I rarely get pimples anymore. I'm trying to get out of it forever, so I'm finding a natural and permanent way to get rid of my acne. |

| Pros | Simple, just take a pill to fight acne. |
|---|---|
| Cons | Possible dangerous side effects from using an antibiotic long-term. |
| Bottom line | Took Doryx for face acne for several months with moderate success, but then it stopped working. Dermatologist switched me to Bactrim. Saw results after around week 2 and face became much clearer. But after week 3, I developed flu symptoms -- fatigue, aches, nausea, chills, fever, loss of appetite. A few days later the fever and chills went away but my urine was unusually dark. Finally realized it might not be the flu, but a reaction to Bactrim. Stopped taking it and contacted my dermatologist and primary care physician. Blood work shows abnormal readings about my liver, but hopefully I'm on the mend. I've never been allergic to an antibiotic before, but also never taken one for so long. Bottom line: Bactrim works fine for some people, but pay close attention to the possible side effects and notify your doctor right away if you have them -- don't take chances that what you think is just a flu is really your liver telling you to stop! |

| Pros | Seems to be working well to clear most of my acne along with the use of Yaz |
|---|---|
| Cons | I have been using it for 2 months and I still get 2-3 large hormonal cysts during my period even though I am using this along with Yaz |
| Bottom line | It seems to work well for most of the people that have posted on this blog, it has its good days and its bad days for me. I am going to go on Accutane in a couple of months to be completely clear though because this, along with everything else that I have tried, is still not able to clear up the cystic acnes(?) that I get during my period, which leave extremely visible dark spots and scars. The oil level on my face has not changed either. I have always had quite a lot of oil on my face and this does not lessen it. Not that it's supposed to, but just saying. For people with mild acne this should be great. |

| Pros | easier than using a system such as Proactiv |
|---|---|
| Cons | awkwardly large pill, takes ages to see results |
| Bottom line | I don't have cystic acne, only whiteheads, but I have a ton of them. sulfa- made my acne the worst its ever been in the 6 years ive had it, but eventually let up. ive yet to see real results, but i'm still hoping. also, the pill is breakable, so split it in half and just take both halves separately- much less pain that way :) |
