Differin has cleared up my moderate case of cystic acne, and I love it. Your dermatologist may not mention this, but IT TAKES SEVERAL MONTHS TO WORK. It took 3 months before I could honestly say I was happy with my skin. Visit the Differin website to see what I mean -- they have photos of faces pre-treatment and at various steps along the way, and in some cases it took 3 to 6 months to really work. I recommend sticking with it for at least 3 months before making a judgment. Your skin will most likely continue to break out during that time, but it slowly gets smoother and clearer.
I was fortunate in that my skin didn't have much of an adverse reaction to this medication. But a word of caution -- stay away from scrubs, waxing, and other harsh treatments. With Differin they can really, really irritate.
If I have one thing to share from my years-long experience of trying to treat my acne, it's "don't give up," Everyone's skin is different; keep trying till you find what works for you.

I have mild-moderate acne (mainly clogged pores, small bumps under the skin, present most of the time). I was prescribed Differin gel 2 years ago. From the time I started using it until about 8 weeks of regular use, my skin was broken out, red, and very dry. Things improved dramatically though and I ended up with very clear, bright skin, with no blemishes, and very tight pores. I stopped using the gel after a while (moved, and didn't renew the prescription... thought maybe my skin would be okay on it's own after about 6 months of using the gel). Eventually my acne returned.
5 weeks ago I started a new course of treatment with Differin cream (0.1%). The first week or so showed no change, weeks 2-4 were pretty awful (very broken out), but now at about week 5 I'm seeing a marked difference in my skin. I still have some small bumps and blackheads, but my skin is clear enough to feel confident going out w/o makeup. Dryness has been much less of an issue this time around too. I am expecting to see continued progress and a really clear face within the next few weeks.
I only apply a small amount of Differing cream (0.1%) at night before bed. I wash my face twice daily (with either a mild soap or cream cleanser). I exfoliate with a wash cloth in the morning. I apply a light face cream and light makeup during the day. i like Differin over other treatments because it I don't feel it or smell it on my skin, and it doesn't stain or bleach bedding/towels. No one can tell I am using it but my skin keeps improving. This time I plan to continue using it even after my skin has completely cleared.
